"Won't you come with me?" Swiftpaw asked, flexing his claws with anticipation.

Thornpaw shook his head, "Fireheart told us that apprentices can't go out alone. We'd get in huge trouble if we got caught."

Swiftpaw snorted. "None of the warriors are doing anything about the dogs. They'll be elated when they find out we've driven them out. They're just a couple of dogs, anyway. They'll have to make us warriors then!"

Thornpaw padded towards Swiftpaw, his eyes round with worry. "Please don't go, Swiftpaw. It's dangerous."

The black and white cat touched noses to his friend, purring at Thornpaw's undisguised affection. "It'll be fine, Thornpaw, don't worry. I can take on a couple of dogs."

The bracken colored tom sat down beside his friend, twining their tails together. He knew Swiftpaw was a skilled, clever fighter. He knew his best friend better than any cat in the Clan, and sitting here next to him, their pelts brushing affectionately, Thornpaw knew that Swiftpaw meant more to him than just a friend. Turning his head to face the black and white tom, he licked Swiftpaw's cheek. He could hear Swiftpaw purring loudly, and knew that Swiftpaw felt the same.

"I see I can't stop you. Come back soon, Swiftpaw." Thornpaw mewed, pressing his head against his friend's cheek, "You won't want to miss your own warrior ceremony."

"I will." Swiftpaw licked Thornpaw between the ears before getting to his paws and signaling for Brightpaw to follow him toward the entrance tunnel. Turning back to blink at Thornpaw, he added mischeviously, "I hope Bluestar will name me Swiftclaw. I've always liked that name."

Thornpaw watched as Swiftpaw padded through the tunnel entrance, a cold feeling of dread form in his belly. Little did he know, that would be the last time he ever saw Swiftpaw alive.
