Wow... I can't even reach that Gym, and my Pokemon are type advantage over most of my in-game Friends Pokemon, yet the desert alone is more than enough to hold me back...

Well, your friends and the pokemon at the desert are somewhat different case :´3
Taking a water or grass Pokemon there surely helps
