Description I had some little leftover pieces of aida fabric, but they were big enough that I didn't want to just throw them out.

I've seen patterns like this before, but I decided to make my own, which you can see behind the bookmarks. Also, that meant the pattern fit the leftover pieces perfectly.
It's based on the Final Fantasy 7 save screen (the large screen usually before or after cutscenes), but the pieces were small enough, it's practically its own work now. I doubt anyone would even notice it was made off of something else.

They were made for three friends of mine, and they each picked what color they wanted.

I'm not exactly sure what part of the process you're asking about what I did. lol. XD I made the pattern, stitched them, cut the extra fabric a little to have the pattern fit nicely, frayed the edges slightly, and then washed them. I assume you mean the actual stitching, right? Considering uploading the pattern as a resource, but I haven't decided yet...

I have no idea how to start something so awesome

I need to try at least!

I'm sure you could get it with the right guidance!

First things first. Do you know how to cross stitch? Or anything about it for that matter? (You can note me, btw, if that would be easier.)

Well I got one of those DIY kits from Walmart. I just have yet to open and explore it.

That's a great way to start. My first piece of advice is that you can never check your counting too much, but if something does go off, it doesn't matter! Don't sweat it. lol.

Yea... I'm so basic I don't even know what I'm counting.

I'll work on the diy and go from there

Everyone has to start there too, so don't feel bad!

So you have a grid pattern printed in the instructions. If you look closely at the fabric, called aida (there's more types, but this is the standard), you can see it's weaved back and forth to create a grid with small holes. You thread the needle through the holes to create an "x" over one square. One square on the fabric relates to one square on the pattern. So, you count the squares and stitches in order to follow the pattern.

Wow!! That makes so much sense to me!! I'm going to try it out and keep you posted. Hopefully it will go smoothly

Honestly, the basics, like the stuff you get in cheap kits is pretty simple. It's more a matter of building the habits over time. There are some more advanced stuff that makes cross stitching more complicated, but even then, the directions in kits tend to be as thorough as they need to be.

Yay! Good luck!

Oh! So just doing it will help me get used to the motions and things. I see!
Well I will get a few more and do my best!

I will. I found the little kit but I think it's a little too intricate for me

I looked impossible to do. I'll get one that is much more simple.

Gotta start somewhere my dear! But yeah, find something that YOU find simple. (What looks simple to me or someone else, may not look simple to you.) This was my first, if you ignore the ones I attempted when I was really little: fav.me/d6jl55t

I found it at Wal-Mart, but I'm sorry it's out of stock online. :/ But you totally can do it if you keep at it!

I found a few kits that looked much easier. But I'm such a beginner I don't even know how much thread to put through the needle >_<

FireWings26 In reply to momokitty27 [2015-09-02 21:15:01 +0000 UTC]

Read ALL the directions. lol. It should tell you. Generally speaking, cross stitches use 2 strands and backstitching will use just 1 strand. Here's a good article on how to separate floss since it's easier to show with pictures rather than explain. www.needlenthread.com/2013/08/…

And when I mean two, I mean pull two strands from the bunch and leave the tail hanging from your needle. Not sure how you stitch, but that's the general way.

The directions are basically grids and diagrams. The written stuff didn't help so I went online to see if I could get some instructions to clear it up

If I could I'd make you a video. lol. But I don't have a tripod.... The grid with symbols IS the pattern. The symbols correspond to the thread colors, which should be explained in a table/chart. Maybe note me with picture(s) of your directions so I can point out what is what?

I swear I keep seeing the "1 Note" notification and telling myself I'll get to it soon, but then too much time passes. I'm sorry I've been so busy. I know it's there, but I just haven't looked at it yet.
