My latest obsession has been Treasure Planet, so I had to do some fanart for it. And of course, one of my favorite parts is Jim solar surfing in the beginning. UGH how it inspires me so!So, this picture just kind of made itself. I love when that happens. Though the hardest part was finding reference pictures for his solar surfer, gyah! The best I got were from screencapping the movie itself, and even then, idk man.
Hopefully I'll make more Treasure Planet fanart in the future!!
Oh, and yes, the cheesy lens flare was totally necessary. XD

P.S. For any attentive fans who noticed Jim's wearing his greenish shirt instead of the black one, kudos. I'd like to think this pic takes place after he comes home and before he goes off to space academy. One last joyride before school? He somehow acquires his surfer AND his jacket, lmao. IDK, but who cares?

Awesome! I'm a big Treasure Planet fan, and that version of Jim inspired one of my greatest OC's, Jim Hawkes. He's a superpowered badass who sounds like Goku (Ian James Corlett and Sean Schemmel in particular) from Neo-California who fights evil with his friends, sister, and 2 cousins.

you would probably have that kind of feeling that only can be described as being free as the bird. just imagine the wind making your hair and clothes flutter in the air and making cool stunts at the same time.

ZOH, MY WORD, I LOVE YOU!!! This is beautiful! The surfing scene is, in my humble opinion, one of the most breathtaking animated scenes ever, and you caught the thrill of the moment. I love everything from your style to Jim's stance to even the lens flare!
Artist to artist, may I suggest one tiny thing? I'm not one to talk, because I struggle with anatomy and angles, but if you ever decided to redo this image, I would suggest either drawing Jim with his knees closer to his body or drawing the board's top side visible (angled toward the viewer.) What you have works, but it looks like Jim's feet aren't planted on the board. Nevertheless, this is a very nice piece, and I am favoriting it NOW.

I thank you for your honest input, and I agree! I should've spent the time to correct the positioning of his legs since the way they are now isn't quite right. I hope to have the time to fix it up one day, as it shouldn't be too hard to alter the image without starting entirely from scratch.

You're better than I am, believe me...! XD I've been playing around with some things recently, so hopefully I'll start to get more comfortable with it. Unfortunately, art is not like math, where one formula works all the time. =/ I prefer math. I oftentimes feel like using a reference is cheating, but I know that people still do that in the professional world so I guess I should just get over it...! =A=;;
