Description
This reminds me of lying comic book covers. And it would have urgent looking text saying "And one will NOT walk away!" Then you flip through the comic, and the scene is more like Teela in the background filing her nails while Man-at-Arms issues a warning to Mer-Man not to bite off more than he can chew. And so he doesn't attack and swims away (instead of walking away, see?). Needless to say, Mer-Man would hardly be featured in the story at all. Also, the previous issue probably said this one was going to be called "DOOM From the Deep!", but the title has now become "Something's FISHY in Eternia!"-----
The plan was just to do Mer-Man and Teela, but it looked a little gruesome. The decision to include Man-at-Arms came later, adding a little more drama and maybe a sliver of hope that tonight's dinner won't be Teela-kabobs. Of course, one immediately wonders why she hasn't just kicked (or done something worse to) Mer-Man's groin. I actually did worry about this briefly, even considering the addition of some kinda tentacly sea beast playing around with Teela's legs, thus adding even more peril and helping to save Mer-Man's Mer-Manhood. But that would have required more work, and I'm very, very lazy. Also, heroic warrior women in the cartoons of my day were too virtuous to go for such cheap shots. Also, since we don't really believe that Teela is actually going to die, I figure we have equal disbelief that Mer-Man's going to have his genitals gored.

Really like the broken sword in Merman's leg. Makes me feel Teela is a valiant warrior, but the sea monster is incredibly powerful.

Mer-Man's bug eyes totally inspire that classic rubber suit monster horror vibe.

I must admit Mer-Man has always been my favorite of Skeletor's creeps. They usually played him (and everyone else) for comedy, but once or twice they tried to let him be serious. I can imagine the sort of monster movie setup with him lurking just below the surface of the water, waiting for the perfect opportunity to grab the unsuspecting Eternian girls skinny dipping in the moonlight...

Oh, yeah, those lying comic book covers!
Great homage to the old-school ruses and the Masters of the U! I think the inclusion of Man-at-Arms is a good move.

Thanks - I enjoyed popping Man-at-Arms in there. After this pic, I was interested in doing something featuring Man-at-Arms and the Sorceress, but I never really got around to making a proper go of it.

Excellent work, I appreciated a lot the intense dramatic feelin on the art, even Teela will not die... well, reminds me mnany scenes from war or police movies The shading and also the way Merman looks, way strong, even wounded, is fantastic ^^

Thanks! I like Mer-Man here. I used to draw some comic book hero type stuff, but somewhere along the line I became just another bastard who draws hot chicks, so I probably should focus on other stuff like this. Mix it up a bit.

Now you need to get someone to edit a DC logo and some comicy text onto it.
But not Comic Sans. No one likes Comic Sans.

I agree with you about the way the titles and previews would be used just to get someone to look at the next one thinking something was really going to happen.
Great version of original Teela.

Thanks. When I dug up this pic to finish it, I was wondering why I made certain decisions about Teela's appearance. One of these days I'll have to do a Teela exactly faithful to the cartoon.
