It's surprising how well you did this when you haven't seen much of the series... It's a great cartoon. We didn't see it until recently, when we got the DVDs, and I'm embarrassed we didn't see it sooner.
It's my opinion that Disney's Baloo was far better suited to TaleSpin than a version of The Jungle Book. It's like he was destined for it.
Disney's Jungle Book is severely overrated, I think- and even though I haven't read the book, it's pretty dumb even by itself. I don't get why so many people like it... Seems to me the only reason it was successful in the first place was that God determined that Disney's animation department shouldn't fold.
I watched a making-of for Jungle Book, and it turns out that an earlier draft of the script was much darker and closer to the book, with an entirely different soundtrack. Walt then told his staff (I'm paraphrasing here) to "make it more Disney-like".
Can you imagine? It seems as though late in Walt's life, he succumbed to his own stereotype and made it fluffy and one-dimensional. It would've been so much better... I can only hope the blu-ray has that early version available to watch as a bonus feature.

I agree. The Jungle Book isn't terrible, but it's not one of Walt's greatest films. That honor IMHO goes to Bambi, Dumbo, Peter Pan, Pinnochio, Lady & The Tramp, Cinderella, and 101 Dalmatians.

Coming from you, that's a huge compliment! Thank you!
I agree. Having read the book, I can honestly say that it's one of the few times Disney didn't do better. Though it's not nearly as bad as Mulan.
I remember reading that...I was surprised at that. Walt seemed to be one of the last people to resort to formula. I really wish they'd stuck closer to the original. And I would REALLY love to get hold of the early version!

Mulan was definitely "meh" for me. Can't comment on how accurately it adapted the story, though.
I feel the same about Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Tarzan, actually.
TaleSpin is just a good adventure series, really- it's definitely got this '30s and '40s vibe, and of course, an exotic location, talking animals, and pirates. And yet I never saw a full episode (I don't think) when we were kids, and I wish we had. I think maybe I was turned off by the planes or something, or questioned why it used Jungle Book characters.

Actually, my love for TaleSpin is quite recent too! I hadn't seen it either when it used to air.
And exactly like you, i wish i did! ^^
Did you know we are currently making a fan video game?

I say, this is indeed funny - me and my friends spent much time yesterday evening remembering the good old days of 2D animated Disney Shows; and of course we recalled TaleSpin with much nostalgia! And here's a jolly image of the main char himself! Timing, says I!

I recommend reading the original book - one of the few times the Disney version wasn't actually better than the original!

I really recommend re-reading it! "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi" is brilliant too, if not even better!

I seem to be one of few people who didn't! I'm sure I saw it a few times, but I don't remember much.
