Description Never tried drawing Miyazaki's animated characters before. Style thing, I'm afraid. Miyazaki's character design is always drawn in neat and clear-cut lines, while my sketch style is nothing like that.

(And I don't think I can ever get Howl's feather right...)

Howl's Moving Castle is one of my favourite Ghibli movies. Lost count of how many times I've watched it. Not that I have ever had a huge crush on Howl. (I'm fond of Howl, but no frenzy fangirling entailed...) But I can somehow relate myself with Sophie before her accident/adventure: quiet, timid, self-conscious, hardly sociable... And the "finding out what you really are" theme is what I've enjoyed most from the movie, much, much more than the romance.

Have never read Diana Wynne Jones' story, though. Heard the book and the movie tell entirely different tales, and quite a number of movie fans I know do not enjoy the book!Howl as much. I haven't decided if I should proceed on the book yet.

Characters belong to Diana Wynne Jones and Ghibli Studio.

Pretty great drawings for having such drastically different styles! Sophie's eyes in the top right are perfect.
Read the book. Not so much because of the movie, but because Diana is such a great author... But if you read only one book by her, read the first volume of the Chrestomanci Chronicles, it's even better. The nice thing about reading Howl's Moving Castle is you get a bit more of an idea why Howl and the Witch hate each other so much.

ooh I love them in a more sketchy style! Much as I enjoy Miyazaki's work, I always thought the drawing-style was very shiny, almost like plastic in many cases - this makes them more organic-looking
I personally think you should read the book, it has a lot of interesting mysteries and revelations and Sophie's voice/the storytelling is absolutely hilarious

Thank you. Personally I think Miyazaki's style is, well, made to be animated, and it looks better when animated indeed.

The book is added to my list. (Won't start it before finishing my other reading, though^ ^)

The animation is amazing, I think Miyazaki himself described it as 'giving it time to breathe', like, he ads in all the little movements and moments people have, which are often left out of regular animation. I love that
Makes sense, just thought I'd add my recommendation
