So, after months of begging, I finally got my brother to lend me his Pokemon White game, and boy is it awesome! Say what you will about the massive Pokemon universe/ merchandising kindgdom, but dang are the games great. He even let me restart the whole thing (he had already beaten the game), so I got to start my adventure from the beginning and everything! I honestly haven't played one of these since Pokemon Red, so it's kinda like I'm rediscovering my love of the series.However, one of the things I never did with my Pokemon Red was give nicknames to my team. Boy, was I missing out! Nicknaming is da BOMB. I just dig giving ridiculous names to my Pokemon. My current team consists of PHATTY the Pignite, SNOOKI the Stoutland, ROOL.I.DO the Palpitoad, EDEN (as in this cutie patootie: [link] ) the Leavanny, and Z-UNIT the Zebstrika.
I...don't know why they are all vaguely ghetto-sounding.

Only terrible people would ever trade someone a "(SPECIESNAME)" over the GTS... dooming that poor critter to forever be unnamed and unnameable due to the way the game handles traded PokΓ©mon names (that is, locking in the name... even if there isn't one.)

That Pokemon really does look like a Paula! I didn't nickname my Pokemons, but everyone else does it and it looks like I missed out on a lot of fun. Gut instinct does seem to be the best way. XD

lol This was great! I never nicknamed Pokemon in Red either. :0 I think I started with nicknames in Gold or Cyrstal. I turned on some of my old games out of curiosity, and most of the names are DREADFULLY unoriginal. XD

Sometimes I try to make my nicknames interesting, and go for a theme eg. Greco-Roman names, but then I usually end up breaking the theme with a spur-of-the-moment kinda name. Like my Reshiram, "Orwell", after the novelist.
I remember my little cousin got called "obnoxious" by her brother one day, and then when she caught a mareep, she decided to call it that, but she spelled it wrong. Even so it was too funny to change. "Just a little more, Umnonxious!" ... Actually if I remember this correctly, I think she had a habit of calling her jerk rival her brother's name. xD

I name most of my pokemon by just choosing a name that starts with the same letter as the name of pokemon, like Marvin for my Mareep or Harry for my Hypno. Or I just name it something I think relates to their name, like Assassin for my Hitmonlee or Axolotl for Wooper xD

Lol, it was sooo much fun to play the new game. I loved doing Goldheart though, it was like old times b/c Gold was the 1st game I personally owned, (blue and red belonged to my cousin). But Black was great, new world new Pokemon!

When I give nicknames it varies. Sometimes it is gut, sometimes names of characters in movies or books, or some other source.
I named my female Samurott, Mallow. One time I named my Pokemon Gold team after Harry Potter characters.
I like the name Z-UNIT, sounds like a robot.
I do think it is funny that in the beginning of the game Professor Juniper has to introduce me to my best friends. Forgetting my best friends is worse than Professor Oak forgetting his grandson's name, he can claim old age.

You bring up a good point- other than gut instinct, I name them after tv show, movies, books, etc. that I really like. Lots of Sesame Street and Peter Pan names, haha
