Emmaline reached for the wisp floating above the pool and almost had it when Carrot gave a soft, inquisitive chirp and tugged her hair. The cat-eared woman sat back, letting the wisp float away, and glared at the sand Stryx until his yellow eyes goaded her into looking where he wanted her to look. There, wading through the shallow waters, was a young hatchling. When it noticed them it fanned its wings out and hissed at them. "Oh my," Emma smiled at the hatchling. "I have something you might like," she set the empty jar aside and reached up into the saddlebags on Carrot's back for the pouch of hare meat she'd stripped into treats. "Here little one." she tossed a piece at the hissing stryx.

The meat fell into the water at it's feet and it chirped, backing away. Keeping large eyes on them it investigated the sinking meat and snatched it up. "Just where is your momma, little one?" Emma tossed another small strip when the first was gone and the hatchling made an effort to catch it this time. Carrot chirped and whirred at her, nudging her shoulder for his own treat. "Shh, Carrot." Emma nudged him back and tossed another strip to the hatchling, this time tossing it short so that it had to come closer.

Each time she tossed a new piece she tossed it closer to herself, drawing the little one in. "How did you end up way the heck out here alone?" If the mom hadn't come looking for it yet she could either be in trouble herself, or hadn't noticed- or worse, abandoned it. Emma bit her lip as she tossed the last strip of hare meat to the hatchling. It gobbled up the treat and crouched just within reach to stare at her. Carrot chirped again and Emma carefully reached up to pull another pouch out of the saddle bags. This time Carrot demanded his own treat, hissing at her, and the hatchling until she elbowed his beak and tossed a piece into the bush beside them.

Thoroughly distracted, Carrot rooted through the leaves for his morsel as Emma turned back to the young one. "Well, come on. If your momma hasn't come looking for you yet I'm sure we can take care of you." Emma tossed more meat at the hungry hatchling. The hatchling fluffed its feathers at her, eyes drooping, and settled down closer to the dark grass. Emma smiled and gently reached to collect it. "Come here, silly thing. You'll get cold way over there." It hissed and pecked at her arms halfheartedly and she chuckled again, purring gently to it. Reflexively Carrot cooed and turned back to them, butting her shoulder lightly.
