Description
EDIT: I use Paint Tool Sai, and you can see my brush setting on my FAQ: [link]Phew that took me a while. Sorry for the horrible put together i'm lazy.
People have been asking me to make a tutorial a lot but I don't think I'm good enough to call it that so let's just call it 'my coloring process put together with vague explanations'! yay!
Hope you're happy because I should be asleep right now and instead I made this.
If you have a question please check the FAQ first, I may have already answered! [link]

Probably the manga Hetalia. I dunno, that was a guess. *shrugs shoulders* Good tutorial by the way. I'm not a digital artist, but you never know, it might help!

Thank you! (I don't really see how it looks like him though)
And this coloring is based off of painting on a canvas traditionally. It's on one layer and you just keep working on it, like on a canvas.
So I wouldn't say that it won't help traditional artists as well :>

I don't even know what the Hetalia America looks like, lol! :-D
It's good that this will help, because I suck at colouring in skin...

Than you so much! It has been very useful!
If it's not a problem for you, can you please have a look to this [link] and give me some advices? I tried to do it with your coloring style
Thank you again!

I love seeing the differences between the sketch and the final product! Personally, I'd have been WAAAAYYYY too nervous to make the base colors for the skin, hair, and shirt on the same layer, and then even more so to merge that layer with the sketch. Ohgodyou'resobrave!
So wait, did you use SAI to paint this, or...?

Fishiebug In reply to BoredomIAU [2012-10-12 21:52:28 +0000 UTC]
Yes I used SAI :>
Also I was like the biggest coward when coloring, I used to put every shade on a different layer, did you know that the layer limit in SAI is 256 layers? Yeah, I reached that far.
It was really holding me back and I got lost with the layers too. I suggest you give one layered drawings a try, just with a little doodle, nothing too serious.
I always keep a copy of the sketch in case I don't like the result and I want to try again. (And also to compare the sketch to colored version)
So you could do that if you're scared of ruining the drawing

BoredomIAU In reply to Fishiebug [2012-10-13 04:08:18 +0000 UTC]
You reached the LIMIT?! That's pretty impressive, I didn't think it had a limit -- much less one that's so small!
I don't usually shade on separate layers unless I'm using a different color (like reds or greens), but I have been tempted to do so before.
I'll give one-layered drawing a shot, then. I'll work with the doodles first until I get more comfortable with it. Thanks for the advice!

I think this is a great tutorial and it's so awesome to see your process! I still wish this had gone into a bit more detail and definition at each stage but over all, very good and easy to follow, thank you so much!

Isn't it annoying how the sketch often looks better than the finished work? It is so in this case, I'd say. The finished work here don't have the same feeling at all as the first intended one. It happens to me all the time.
I'll say "good job". I'll say "great job" when the outcome share the same feeling as the sketch ;o

Fishiebug In reply to Slipmaskin [2012-10-12 20:04:27 +0000 UTC]
I guess this would be right in most cases only I'm actually pleased with how it came out. I feel that the end result was what I was going for, not the sketch.
The sketch for me is never "the intended one", the finished picture is. Had it been otherwise, I wouldn't have finished drawings and instead I would've uploaded only sketches.
As 'good' as this sketch may be, it was not quite what I was going for.
Also I'd like to mention that these sort of comments are unpleasant and insulting. It does not matter how true it may be, no one wants to hear that "the old version is better", (In this case, the sketch)because clearly they disagree, or else they wouldn't have uploaded it in the first place.
I appreciate it that you took your time to write feedback on this but please keep these sort of comments to yourself next time.

I will enlighten this misunderstanding. I seem to have narrowmindly come to the conclusion before that everyone plans their work the same way. I thanks you for widening my perspective.
It is true that sometimes you have a vision of how you like something to turn out and then you strive to make it that way. Not always does one - like I had misinpreted it all and like I most often begin my work - start with a small sketch that evolves into something that you like. It is in these cases that, when you are finished and the end product doesn't have the same feeling as the sketch that turned out so well that you get a bit annoyed.
I didn't mean to sound unpleasant and insulting. I was in a hurry, and we both obviously suffered from that. I still think your work is good, both sketch and finished work.

Just wonderin', how'd you make the sketchy lineart look so smooth in the end?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Fishiebug In reply to TheInkAdept [2012-10-12 13:15:05 +0000 UTC]
I wrote how in the tutorial, I merged the sketch and the colors together and then I just polished it. I basically went over the lines (as well as the rest of the drawing) with the water tool (aka the smooth look giver).
