There are alot of factors. Most importantly is # of polygons in scene, AA settings and your 2 quality sliders. Lots of folks like to just create a blanket ecosystem that covers the whole terrain. In this render for instance only about 25% of the terrain has any plants on it. This scene clocked in at 800 million polygons with 7 terrains 6 ecosystems using some high poly count trees. Render settings also dont need to be set too high. This was rendered at final quality. If the pic doesnt look very good on final then you should do some adjustment to your atmo/textures. If all else fails.... photoshop can fix anything

Crossview or even anaglyph would be good enough.
