What can I say, this is just incredible. the focus is amazing, but the combination of subjects is what gets me. the frog and the flower. superb

Great shot! I love the contrast between the colour of the frog and the flower. The neutral background really compliments it - even the light part of the background in the right corner doesn't ruin it. I'm not sure about the technical term, but I think it concerns depth of field, I'd love to see more focus. But the detail of the frog's eye is superb!
A question - did you crop this or is this the full photo?
In any case I'll give it a fav, because it's very good and I'm sure I'll learn from it!

Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment
I couldn't do much about the light part of the background - this shot is as taken, no PS - I was more annoyed at the time that the cottage was shadowing half the picture, but I'm not too unhappy, as the diagonal clean line that the shadow casts isn't too intrusive (for me at least).
The DOF (depth of field, you're right) is purposeful in this case - as you can see from my gallery, my 'thing' really is DOF (a short one, at that), and using it generally to get conceptual or slightly abstract views of my subjects. I do agree that in the case of fauna (as opposed to flora) it can sometimes detract, but here I hope I use the DOF to pull the viewer into the eye, and then second into the overall composition/colour of the photo. As you can see from Grinning Gecko reprise using the DOF in such a way to miss the nose, means the eyes are far more effective (in my opinion/for the effect I wanted anyway!).
I do understand the enjoyment of a deep DOF and crisp, clean shot though
This is the full photo. I took a few, quickly, and have a couple of him leaning further over the thistle, but this was the best in my opinion. It would have been nice to capture his feet maybe, but he only sat still for a very short amount of time!
Anyway, thank you again for the comment and the - much appreciated!

First off, thanx for this little discussion, I find it very useful!
I agree about the background, if DOF was intentional, ok, but I still would have liked a little bit more of it
And as for the size - I had exactly the same thought about capturing the feet too, so I wanted to see if maybe there was a reason for a crop
See ya around

-chuckles- much thanks (even if there's emoticon madness in my name there... -I- know who you mean)
Again, loving the DOF...
and... it is actually possible to catch a flash of wonderment in a frog's face... kinda like it's gazing up into the air, wondering how to fly (which might make it easier to catch dinner )

Dear me, concussion strikes again! Fixed
I thought the same - he looks very thoughtful and contemplative! I named him Gerald (I'm not entirely sure why). I have enough pic of him I'd like to post, where he ended up sticking to my glass of water on the way down to the river, but my head has decided I am to retire for the moment - hopefully a little later, or tomorrow, melon-shaped head and throbbing pain willing, of course

Indeed it was! Luckily it posed for me for about 3 seconds on the thistle before hopping over my rug, into my glass of water (I got a fresh glass!..), and then and off towards the river to see it's froggy mates
