Summary:
The tengu are a race of warriors that live in the mountains. They live in caves and can live for 300 years, [See, Society & Culture] they're extremely dedicated to combat and can move lightning while fighting in flight. They can also use the base form of magic called aura manifestation which increases they're physical abilities and also allows them to use a green energy in battle. [See, Combat & Martial Arts] When a tengu masters these abilities they then become a Daitengu and have their wings removed before being sent down the mountain to improve themselves in a new environment. Very few Humans have witnessed their society due to them being banned from entry into tengu villages. [See, Daitengu] This is because the tengu once had a mighty queen named Karura, a giant beast said to eat dragons for snacks and possess so much power that she made Japan almost uninhabitable apart from a few other species and the tengu themselves. Eventually a group of humans fleeing from China washed up on shore with nowhere else to go; they built their new lives despite the difficulty of the environment. [See, The Great Queen] A tengu named Sōjōbō took pity on the creatures and decided to give them food and supplies in order to improve their living conditions. [See, The Traitor] After spending time with them eventually began to understand how barren and lifeless Karura had made this place. Returning to his home Sōjōbō began his mission to bring the beauty of the land back and as a result gained many followers including the support of the dragons and nurarihyon which gave the humans hope to the point where they even began to spread and create new towns and villages. [See, The Journey To Prosperity] However despite their efforts slowly working, the presence of dragons caused Karura to be drawn up north! And with a dragon currently residing in the main home of the humans she came to visit. Her landing and subsequent capturing of the dragon in her claws ripped the earth apart, before she lifted back off the ground and the flapping of her wings completely annihilated the entire town and everyone in it! [See, Wings of Death] A few days later a being seen as the tengu prince and the voice of Karura's will came to Sōjōbō and his fellow currently grieving and soul crushed tengu to spread his propaganda. Saying that their dream was bogus and evil and that they should stop. While some were convinced, the rest along with Sōjōbō remained strong. after holding a funeral for the fallen and helping rebuild the other villages that had also been destroyed because of Karura Sōjōbō and his fellow tengu followers declared war! [See, Death To The Queen] This became the tengu Civil War, which was fought between the tengu who sided with Sōjōbō called the Supporters and the tengu who sided with Karura called the Loyalists. It took 800 years before a tengu named Ryūhōbō created a poison to kill Karura of which they were able to succeed in doing. But it then took another 400 years to get the Loyalists to finally surrender. While they are very few, there are tengu who despise Sōjōbō and see him as a traitor along with the humans that convinced him to do such a terrible crime. So because a normal tengu can easily kill a normal human it's best that they just stay away from one another just to be safe. [See, Tengu v.s. Tengu]
Society & Culture:
A great and honorable society the tengu are a race of winged humanoid carnivores that possess incredible speed and strength. With a lifespan of 300 years the tengu society is as old as it is impressive. These mighty yokai live high upon mountain tops, building their villages with caves near a saddle on the mountain. The caves are used as the tengu's places of rest and their general homes, while the saddles are used as an area for the use of markets, shops and their combat grounds.
Combat & Martial Arts:
The most well known aspect of the tengu, is their incredible skills in combat and their extreme dedication as warriors. Their abilities in martial arts as well as their devotion to the practice is truly admirable, and while not all tengu devote themselves to combat their culture is still mainly centered around it. But while a fight between humans is still impressive the battles fought between tengu is simply glorious, as they don't remain on the ground, they take their rumble to the sky. You see a tengu can use his wings in two different ways. They can use them for long distance flights in order to travel, which while often slow is steady and forces very little use of energy. And short-ranged flight which allows for quick and powerful bursts of speed as well as force. Of which the latter is always used in their legendary duels. Even for the tengu, this is incredibly difficult to master especially the when it comes to halting of ones movement in midair, but when it is mastered the speed and precision of the battles between two tengu warriors is so quick it is like two lightning bolts facing off or are simply dancing in the sky. And thanks to the tengu culture's other skill of being able to forge light-weight but extremely durable armor, the warriors can fight using their fullest potential. Of course there's more that these mighty combatants are able to use in their duels. For you see, the art of Magic is the use of one's aura in order to perform gain mystical abilities and powers, of which there are 5 categories, Aura Manifestation, Universal Transmutation, Elemental Imbuement, Mystical Conjuration and Curses. Aura Manifestation is the base form of magic, it's name is of course very spot on, this skill involves manifesting a person's aura as mystical energy, which can grant an individual increased speed, strength and durability and allow them to summon powerful blast of mystical energy that can be directed at their opponents. The most common color of this energy is bright green as are most forms of magic, however whether due to their power or their uniqueness as an individual the color can be different and as you guessed the tengu are naturals when it comes to this skill. Of course when a tengu is finally able to master all these abilities it doesn't result in the ending of their journey.
Daitengu:
Upon mastering all of these skills and then claiming victory in several different challenges a tengu is rewarded the ultimate rank amongst his/her people, Daitengu. Achieving this rank results in you being seen as one of their greatest warriors and to commemorate this celebration a ceremony is held in order to represent the beginning of their new journey. The tengu's wings are removed from their body by way of blade and then stitched up before the tengu is given a basket of supplies and sent down to the summit in order to learn and improve their abilities. After that these Daitengu will often engage in combat with Yokai Hunters, Samurai as well as other Yokai in order to become stronger, even teaching other warriors who wish to achieve such skill. Unfortunately apart from some select individuals, very few Humans have ever been to a tengu nest to witness their culture in its entirety.
The Great Queen:
Apart from being in a location very difficult to access and function normally due to its altitude, humans are forbidden from entering tengu Nests. Despite your initial reaction, this rule is meant for the benefit and protection of Humans even though it still stems from a great deal of prejudice and hatred. According to legend the tengu race ones possessed a mighty queen, a giant winged beast so powerful it feasted upon dragons as it's daily snack, created hurricanes and storms that lasted entire seasons with her wings which made the land a place where the sun could barely even be seen let alone rise. This great beast's name was Karura and her presence made the islands of Japan almost uninhabitable with only a select group of species and her tengu children being able to endure in such an apocalyptic environment and eventually the first humans arrived. These humans did not come here by choice as they were a small group of refugees from China, chased out of their homes and dragged onto Japan's shores by a massive storm these humans had very few options. Every time they attempted to leave, Karura's massive storms would hurl them back to shore and with the added bonus of having no idea where they were the refugees were forced to make this place their new home, a place that would eventually be known as Setana, Hokkaido, Japan. A few centuries went by and though Karura's power still caused the conditions to be extremely unbearable the humans were still able to survive thanks to Karura's main flight pattern being between Mount Ontake, Mount Gassan and Mount Fuji of where she was also generally known to roost. But while her sheer power could still affect the refugees almost 450 km away at the closest, it was very rare the Humans had to deal with her full strength. However whenever Karura decided to take a trip up north, it caused many innocent lives to be lost and many homes to be completely destroyed. And while she never came directly to the town the destruction often left very few survivors and they began to despise Karura as well as her tengu children, often they would attack any who flew by. But as the tengu had no understanding as to why these creatures would engage in such aggression towards them they only saw them as ruthless killers. And as the survivors of these encounters spread their tales of human brutality the tension between the two began to rise.
The Traitor:
However a young tengu named Sōjōbō and his friends become interested by these stories, and like any teen who's told about something dangerous foolish decides to seek it out regardless. Watching from afar, Sōjōbō and his friends observe the Humans as they live their daily lives. At first they begin to make theories about what they think the humans are like and why they do the things they do, but as they watch even more closely they begin to understand how difficult their lives are. Sōjōbō and his friends watch as these miserable creatures suffer another hellish day. They watch the many tears the humans shed, from the grieving who lost someone they loved either from the slow pain of starvation or the swift destruction of a storm, or the brutal mauling of another monstrous yokai. From the desperate who would seclude themselves in their rooms in order to break down or would simply snap from the stress and attack a random individual in the street or a family member that they would use as a way to expel the pain for which they carried, as the frightened would urge them to stop before they preformed something they would regret. Unlike the hopeless who shed no tears and simply walk aimlessly around as if they were nothing but moving corpses. Time and time again Sōjōbō returned and soon they realized, what they believed to be the humans' strange way of architecture were actually the many homes that were destroyed and that would take away too much time and resources to repair. After so long watching these humans suffer, Sōjōbō decided to finally try and help the humans despite knowing the danger it would put him in. While his friends eventually lost interest, Sōjōbō simply couldn't stand by and watch them suffer despite knowing that they would most likely kill him regardless. Secretly Sōjōbō gathered food, bricks and different types of metal from his nest and then would leave them a couple yards away at night so they could discover them in the morning whilst doing his best to make sure they would always find it. That way they wouldn't starve and they could fortify their buildings against the strong winds that kept destroying their homes. Sōjōbō began to do this so often, his fellow tengu saw him so rarely they practically thought he had just gone off and died. The humans even began to treat his gifts as blessings from the divine, but eventually had to relieve himself. While it wasn't easy to convince the humans he wasn't a threat due to him being a tengu, when he was able to do so it wasn't very difficult for them to treat them like one of their own. While many were still extremely hesitant even attempting to kill at some points he was eventually welcomed with welcomed arms.
The Journey To Prosperity:
For 100 years Sōjōbō remained amongst the humans, assisting them more and more, slowly improving their lives one day at a time. He learned so much about the humans and the humans in turn learned much about the tengu. But still despite his efforts the people suffered, the land was still barren and the raging storms would never weaken, only grow more furious. With Sōjōbō no longer being able to take supplies from his nest due to their increased security and the fact the humans had to become independent regardless, all Sōjōbō could do was work with what he had and what he had was very little. As time went by Sōjōbō began to view his mission in a more broadened scope. Being carnivores and knowing almost nothing else, the barren landscape and lack of plant life was never any tengu had ever noticed. But the crops and flowers the humans planted, the tales of their homeland from where the humans came from, how it was always spoken of in beauty and life in contrast to the often bleak land for which they lived in made Sōjōbō yearn to make this world the same for all life. He decided that if he were to do so he couldn't do it alone. Soon he left the humans in order to achieve that goal, returning home to his nest, he revealed to his brothers and sisters where he had been and what he intended to do, and soon his words began to gain support. Over the course of the next 40 years his goals of a better world soon spread, even gaining the support of both the mighty Dragons and the soon to be legendary Nurarihyon. However, no matter what efforts they took to achieve this goal, as long as Karura still lived there was nothing that could be done, and though her responsibility for the destruction was clear as day to Sōjōbō she was still his Queen, but soon that would no longer matter.
Wings of Death:
Every now and then Sōjōbō would return to the human settlement so as to check up on their condition, with Sōjōbō's mission giving a new sense of hope to the Humans with many leaving their original home and moving further up north out to create new towns and with the Dragon's assistance it was also working. Much of the flora in the area was steadily improving with Setana as the being the beacon of that future. Until Karura came for a visit! With her favorite meal gathering up north she simply couldn't resist, Karura came all the way up to Setana and park directly in the village! Landing upon them like a god coming down from the heavens, with a loud and horrific boom Karura's massive talons obliterated the earth beneath her as she landed! Sōjōbō and his tengu supporters tried their best to get the people to safety. But with the humans in disorder and panic with only a few who had not been injured from Karura's landing, all they could do was run with all their might with the mark of terror across their faces! One such dragon had decided to take up residence in the village, but now that dragon was bleeding in agony from the giant nails impaling his flesh. And with the meal she sought in her possession, Karura slowly lifted her wings, as the terrified humans watched in sheer horror, before in a fraction of second the tengu Queen had taken flight, while the village and even the dirt beneath it had been completely whipped away like a drawing in the sand! Only the tengu were able to endure the force of Karura's wings, even the few humans they attempted to fly to safety were ripped apart by her power. And though just seconds before, Sōjōbō had taken hold of a young human girl in an attempt to shield her, she was sadly still completely mutilated and was only able to stay alive for a few minutes before passing on. Even the other villages were still completely decimated, and though they weren't hit as hard by the attack as there were still in fact survivors the amount of destruction was perhaps the most horrific thing for anyone to witness. This was the last straw!
Death To The Queen:
A few days later, with Sōjōbō and his tengu supporters still devastated by what had happened as they attempted to recover another individual had come to visit. He was the Kotengu Daranibō, essentially the tengu prince and seen as the voice of Karura's will. Like the cruel bastard he was, after having the very symbol of their dream for a better home destroyed along with the lives of hundreds of innocent lives being lost many of whom the tengu considered to be their close friends and even lovers, Daranibō decided to take advantage. Daranibō said that this was a punishment as well as a warning and blessing from the great Karura, that the Humans, Dragons and Nurarihyon were all using them to make them destroy the perfect world of which Karura had built, in order to forge a new world of chaos and destruction! If they were to end their foolish crusade they would be forgiven and if they did not they would be destroyed. After that unfortunate visit, the repairing of the surviving villages was underway. A massive funeral was held in honor of the many lives that were lost as a result of Karura's attack, and while it wasn't an easy thing to request a group of creatures to return to an area where they were constantly hunted and devoured by a giant bird, the Dragons nevertheless had to return south for the safety of the humans and their goals of improving Japan overall. However now Sōjōbō's mission became even more difficult as Daranibō's words had wormed it's ways into many of his brothers and had abandoned him. And slowly within Sōjōbō was a fire that was slowly burning stronger, as it yearned to be let loose. Finally the village repairs were finished and the humans were back on their feet, Sōjōbō gathered his followers and though they were few in numbers it was finally time to do something they should have done long ago! On that day Sōjōbō and his followers began their new mission to slay Karura for that was the only way in which they could achieve the world they sought, on that day the tengu Civil War was declared!
Tengu v.s. Tengu:
The Tengu civil War lasted for 1200 years, the two factions were declared as the Loyalists and the Supporters. Though the Supporters had a rocky start at first, with so few members it seemed almost an impossible mission. But their numbers quickly grew and so did their strength! Though very few humans joined the battle, whilst the dragons and nurarihyon only assisted the Supporters with supplies and were mainly not involved it still was a major help regardless! Though Sōjōbō was never able to witness their victory, a tengu named Ryūhōbō was eventually able to develop a powerful poison that could slay Karura, and with it he was able to lead the charge to victory. However this victory was achieved 800 years into the war, even with Karura's death it took the another 400 years to force the Loyalists to surrender. But eventually they did and Japan's journey of transforming into one of the most beautiful places on earth had at last begun. However to this day many tengu and tengu nest's, still remain loyal to Karura and continue to hold on to their hatred of the Traitor Sōjōbō and the dreaded Humans that influenced him to take their Queen. It is even heard that nests ran by these tengu do not perform Daitengu ceremonies, as this tradition was made by the Supporters to represent how living amongst others and walking upon the earth is so important and enlightening. However, whether it's a small minority of troublemakers in a nest or the entire nest itself, if a Human enters a tengu nest it's very unlikely they'll make it back out which is why it's best that they stay out entirely.
