Howdy everypony! Here's my second-ever step-by-step video of my illustration process. All of my artwork is done exclusively in Adobe Flash, and I usually divide my work up into four sections:
1) Red Line - these are my rough sketches. (Brush Tool)
2) Blue Line - these are my cleaned up drawings. (Brush Tool)
3) Black Line - these are my official lined drawings (Line Tool)
4) Color - final step is to color everything and lower lines to 1% opacity.

How come you lower the lines opacity to 1% instead of just deleting them entirely.

WHY IS IT NOT DOING ANYTHING, DAMN

I love your work, but you really take your time

Sorry about that! I'm an animator first - an illustrator second. And because of how time-consuming animation is, I rarely have time to update the Ballad.

For your rough sketches, what are your settings? I can't seem to find the right settings for the brush tool. I can only make it, well, more brushy instead of sketchy :/

FlamingoRich In reply to RavenClaw19181 [2012-03-18 18:12:08 +0000 UTC]

I set it to "50" on the smooth settings - and I'll usually zoom in close with the brush on the second smallest size (second from the top). It also helps that I'm drawing it all using a Cintiq 21ux, which helps my lines to be more smooth since I have more control.

Woof. About how long would you say it takes to do one of these all the way through?

From one SCADDY to another, thanks for sharing your trade secrets! I'll have to practice these.

It depends on the amount of detail - but they usually take anywhere from 12-30 hours from start to finish.

Yeowch. I usually stick in one place until the pic is done, so....I better change my tactic.

It's best to split a production-quality picture up into sections. I usually finalize the sketch and clean up the drawing in one day - then the next day I'll line art and color it.

This is amazing, great job! I can only hope I can even come close to your drawing talent and being able to use Flash. You're going to ace this project for sure!

Just amazing, mate. You have quite the imagination.

Do you use a tablet to sketch out your lines first?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FlamingoRich In reply to SandwichHorseArchive [2012-02-09 21:14:34 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! And yuppers! I use a Cintiq 21ux for the majority of my work - resorting to the mouse for the line art stage.

SandwichHorseArchive In reply to FlamingoRich [2012-02-09 21:25:37 +0000 UTC]

Wow that purchase must've set you back. That's a pretty high-end piece of equipment. I've been thinking of getting myself a new tablet. All I have right now is a simple Bamboo Pen and Touch which feels like too small of a work space for me.

FlamingoRich In reply to SandwichHorseArchive [2012-02-09 21:27:46 +0000 UTC]

Well luckily I didn't have to buy it - since there's like, 300 of them here inside my college's animation building. But I do plan on purchasing my own here eventually so that I don't have such horrid down-times during school breaks where the campus is closed.

Maybe if I want some advanced courses I'll travel for a different school. But I think I'll stick to Ontario's colleges for now.

What exactly was the course you went for anyway? 2-D animation or something?

How come you don't use tools designed for drawing still frames like Illustrator for instance? Great work by the way

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FlamingoRich In reply to Hazel-Brown [2012-02-09 19:35:06 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! The reason I use Flash instead of Illustrator is because my approach to these panels is from an animator's perspective. This is why the panels are usually in horizontal or vertical pan format - rather than dimensions that would better suit an actual printed storybook.

The entire goal of this project is to teach myself Adobe Flash so that when the time comes for my senior film (this Fall) I'll have the necessary amount of experience in the program to excel in whatever I need to do.
