*In Equestria and the Crystal Empire a princess is allowed to have a mate. However in Harmonia the princess must remain pure. Should she take a partner and her purity be tainted then both ponies shall be put to death. It is the law.*
Lagoon Star: “Commander Sketchbook, have you ever had anypony special in your life?”
Sketchbook: “No your highness, never.”
Lagoon Star: “Never? Really? Why is that?”
Sketchbook: “For a long time I’ve been in love with somepony. I haven’t even thought of being with anypony else.”
Lagoon Star: “She sounds like a very lucky mare. Who is she?”
Sketchbook: “It… It’s you Lagoon Star. You’re the one I love. The only one I’ve ever loved.”
Lagoon Star: “Sketchbook, I don’t know what to say.”
Sketchbook: “I… I’m sorry Princess. I shouldn’t have told you that.”
Lagoon Star: “You know the law of our kingdom. Would you really risk your life? To be with me?”
Sketchbook: “For you, I’d do anything.”
Lagoon Star: “Then kiss me.”

In a cultural environment, with male domination, also there are many cultures with that idea, that aren´t connected, the Arabians, the Europeans, the Asians and the India Folks developed these idea all for themselves.
Equestria is a female dominated world, at least as far as we know, so it is not unlikely that these roles are inverted or non existent.
I personal like the idea of a society where females measure them with, how successful they are at getting males, and where males are worthless as non-virgins.
