Synopsis: Vanessa is becoming increasingly concerned she may be turning into Vanny again but Gregory's reaction to her announcement completely takes her by surprise..Sins of the Mother by flashstudiosguy
“Run, Gregory, run!”
She tries to stop herself from moving but her legs just won’t respond, constantly moving one in front of the other...
“Gregory, find Freddy! Find Monty, Chica, Roxanne, just find someone who can protect you from me!”
She sees something silver dance through the air but can’t focus on it properly, her arms just won’t stop swinging...
“No, not that way, the other way!”
Stupid boy’s turned right instead of left. She knows what’s down that way; nothing. Nothing but a dead end...
“Oh, God, if this is a dream, please, wake. me. up!”
She rounds the corner and sees him, trying his hardest to conceal himself in the far corner, she can hear laughter ringing in her ears. HER laughter.
“Fooound yooou!”
Suddenly, she’s right in his face, so close she can see the beads of sweat trickling down his face, mixing with his tears. Her arm raises and she sees what is clasped in her hand; a large kitchen knife...
“No…no, please, no!”
The knife plunges downwards...
“NOOOOOOO!”
Vanessa sat bolt upright, her body caked in sweat and trembling all over. Breathing hard, she looked around, taking in her surroundings and was relieved to see that she was back in her bedroom in her two bed Midtown apartment. Looking down, she saw she was back in her Roxanne Wolf T-Shirt and sweatpants and there was no sign of any knife.
Knife…?
“GREGORY!”
She leapt out of bed and softly ran to the opposite room. Slowly opening the door a crack, she was relieved to see her adopted son was still tucked up in bed, sleeping peacefully. She sighed with relief, blew him a kiss and returned to her bedroom, where she lay, staring at the celling until sunrise.
Vanessa was in the Kitchen, nursing a mug of black coffee when Freddy entered, the morning paper clutched between his teeth. Vanessa watched him as he rounded the table and dropped it at her feet, backing off so she could bend down and pick it up.
“You know, Gregory could always put your head on something with hands, then you wouldn’t have to fetch the paper like a dog...”
Freddy just smiled and shook his head as he leapt up onto a chair so he could face her a bit better
“I am aware of that fact, Vanessa, however, I feel I provide more joy to Gregory by acting not just as his friend, but also as a pet”
Vanessa smiled as she opened the paper; sometimes, Freddy’s devotion to Gregory rivalled that of her own. As she read up about a rise in fuel prices in Indiana, she became aware of the Animatronic’s electric, quite literally, in his case, blue eyes looking intently at her.
“If you got something to say, Fazbear, spit it out...”
For a moment, Freddy hesitated but then spoke up again
“I am detecting concerning levels of anxiety and fatigue in you…”
Vanessa snorted as she took another sip of her coffee
“Yeah, and you know why that is? Because I didn’t sleep well and now I have a half bear half dog robot twittering in my ear!”
Freddy was about to issue a retort when a yawn from down the hall alerted them that Gregory was up and heading their way.
“Mornin’, guys….”
Gregory rubbed the sleep from his eyes as he grabbed a bowl and poured himself a large portion of Frosty Freddy Flakes before tucking in. Behind the paper, Vanessa shot Freddy one of her trademark glares, the type she used when she was discipling Gregory, and then lowered it so she could look at Gregory and smiled.
“You’ve got that big math quiz today, don’t ya, kiddo?”
Gregory nodded as he ate another spoonful, he really enjoyed Frosty Freddy Flakes, almost as much as Chocolate Chica Crunchies, another one of the many cereal products on sale by Fazbear Entertainment, the company Vanessa worked for as Head of Security at the nearby Freddy Fazbear Mega Pizzaplex.
“Math sucks, all the questions are WAY too easy, I solve them within about five minutes and end up spending the rest of the class just staring out the window...”
Vanessa smiled as she leaned on her elbows
“Well, it’s either go to School and learn to be a world-famous Robotics Engineer or flunk it and spend the rest of your life plodding around an overgrown fast food stand for ten bucks an hour like I do, which one you picking?”
Gregory laughed so hard, milk and frosted flakes almost spurted out of his nose. Wiping his nose, he grinned at his adopted Mom.
“If it’s all the same, I’ll stick with School. Besides, those Security uniforms aren’t exactly flattering...”
Vanessa shot him a mock glare of indignation and crossed her arms as she leaned back in her chair
“Gregory Henry Anderson, did you just say my uniform makes me look fat?!”
Gregory knew she was only teasing but he back peddled all the same, he knew when and when not to annoy his adopted Mother.
“Actually, what I meant was, I don’t think I’d look good in a Pizzaplex Security uniform. You, on the other hand, it really complements you, brings out the authoritative side of you.”
Vanessa chuckled as she finished her coffee and placed the mug in the sink before looking back at the young boy.
“Alright, I’ll let you live. THIS time. Now, you better get going or you’ll be late” she smiled as she tapped her watch. Gregory nodded, shoved the final spoonful into his mouth and bolted out the front door. As she listened to his footsteps heading down the corridor and the opening and closing of the stairwell door, she became aware of Freddy staring disapprovingly at her.
“Don’t look at me like that, Freddy...”
“You are going to have to tell him at some point, Vanessa, you cannot dodge the matter forever...”
Vanessa snorted as she leaned on the sink and glared over her shoulder
“Tell him what, that every night, his adopted Mother has nightmares where she chases him through the corridors of her workplace, praying to God she’ll wake up before she actually does the unthinkable?! He’d never be able to trust me again...”
Freddy sighed as he looked back at her
“It is better than not telling him. Gregory is a smart boy, Vanessa, sooner or later, he will start to notice something is wrong with you. For starters, he may begin to question more why all the knives are locked away in the kitchen drawer…”
Vanessa scoffed again
“In case you haven’t noticed, we live with a young child, of course I’m going to be safety conscious around hazardous stuff like knives and matches!”
“He may notice a reluctance in you to get close to him...”
Vanessa shook her head, almost with defiant anger
“That’ll never happen, Gregory knows I love him too much to separate myself from him. I said it as such the day I officially adopted him.”
Freddy was not determined to give up, he WOULD make Vanessa concede to his side of the argument
“Finally, he might hear you talk in your sleep. It might only be for a few seconds but I’m sure he’ll want to know why you keep calling his name whilst you toss and turn…”
Damn, he’d got her there; her shifts at the Pizzaplex had become a lot more tiring as of recent and she was finding herself randomly dropping off unexpectedly more and more. Who’s to say Freddy wasn’t wrong, that she’d fall asleep and begin crying as she had one of her nightmares? Who’s to say she wouldn’t accidentally hurt Gregory whilst she was sleeping?!
“Ok, fine, when he gets home from School, I’ll tell him everything, deal?”
Freddy nodded, satisfied with her proposition. When Gregory got home, he was feeling pretty good; as expected, he’d blown through the maths questions in the first five minutes but instead of just sitting, staring out the window, his Maths Teacher, Mr. Price, had allowed him to do any outstanding Homework he may have received from other subjects. At Lunchtime, he’d been able to get the last gooey caramel pudding and had managed to best his personal record during Gym Class.
As he’d done all his Homework, he was going to hang at the Arcade with his friends and was just hanging up his backpack and grabbing his skateboard when he heard Vanessa call out.
“Gregory, could you come into the Kitchen? Freddy and I- “
She was interrupted by a curt cough from Freddy before she continued
“I mean, I’ve got something I need to talk to you about...”
Gregory could tell it was serious just by the tone of her voice so obliged; he entered the Kitchen and found Vanessa facing him, Freddy to her right, also looking at him. For a while, no one said anything until Vanessa broke the silence.
“Gregory, I…I wanted to say this, before you heard or witnessed anything that…that might cause you to be concerned about me...”
Gregory placed his skateboard down and took a seat opposite Vanessa, who drew a long breath before looking directly at him.
“Gregory, for some time now, I’ve been- “
“Having nightmares where you relive the night you met me, except, every time, you get closer and closer to killing me.”
Vanessa stared in absolute amazement and shock; Freddy had said Gregory would cotton on at some point but the fact the kid seemed to know about it already and seemed at peace with it was absolutely baffling!
“H-how…when…whydidn’tyoutellmeyouknew?!”
Gregory simply shrugged; he was not a boastful kid, but he never turned down an opportunity to explain his brilliance to someone.
“I got up one night to get a glass of water and heard you calling my name. I thought you needed something until I realised you were asleep. I was about to go back to bed when I saw you were actually crying in your sleep...”
Vanessa’s hand moved to cover her mouth and Freddy placed a comforting paw on her other hand, which was balled up into a fist and trembling like a leaf.
“Gregory, I’m so sorry you had to find out like this. I wanted to tell you sooner, but I was afraid you’d fear I could possibly turn back into Vanny again, that you wouldn’t be able to trust me, the same way you didn’t trust me when we first met...”
To her and Freddy’s amazement, Gregory smiled as he sprang from his chair, raced across the room and threw his arms around his adopted Mother.
“Look, I get why you didn’t tell me, but the stuff you did as Vanny? That wasn’t you, not really, it was all down to Afton. He found you in a vulnerable state and he took advantage of that. Yeah, I was mistrustful of you but then, I’ve been mistrustful of Grown Ups all my life, especially Grown Ups who say they’re in authority and wear uniforms...”
Vanessa could only agree; whilst she was filing the paperwork in order to adopt Gregory, it came to light that Gregory had a little bit of a Juvenile Record. Nothing serious, mainly minor shoplifting charges, but Vanessa fought like the dickens, even going straight to the Supreme Court and swearing that, as long as she drew breath in her body, that her son, Gregory Henry Anderson, would never even get so much as a ticket for Jaywalking, to see that it was completely wiped clean.
“But once I started to realise what a truly kind and caring person you were, I knew I had a future in you. Whatever Vanny was, she’s not you and she never will be, not as long as I believe in you.”
Vanessa was fully crying and she hugged him so tightly, Gregory thought he was going to pass out.
“I love you, Kiddo...”
“I love you too, Mom…”
