Description
I'm still way behind with my step by steps! This one came out really nicely and is one of my favourites this year.
1 - Simple sketch with rough pose and idea for a background
2 - Decided on my light source, and blocked in shapes to help visualize the scene more and get an idea of depth.
3 - Colour ideas - I really liked the idea of using a sunrise. Blocking in some rough shapes for the background. Still wasn't quite sure on the design of the horse at this point.
4 - Starting to get some detailing down on the horse and rocks. Using some grey-ish pruple tones and don't want to commit too much yet with the colours. That front right leg was bothering me so changed the angle.
5 - Changed the horse to purple. Knowing I was going to have the glow from the sunrise on the horse's back, I thought purple helped bring in the blue and orange that are the main background colours. I can borrow both for help in shading the horse and helping it fit in with the scene. Further detailing.
6 - More refining. Just keep painting over things. I'm not skilled enough to be able to paint everything straight away. I build up my detail slowly, constantly thinking about lighting and checking tones and going over bits that don't look right. It's not the quickest way of painting!
7 - Extended the canvas. I feel the horse needed more space behind to really emphasize it running. More refining - decided to add a glow to the main and tail. Almost like the essence of night within. Well, that's what i was initially going for anyway! Still having a bit of trouble with those back legs.
8 - I seem to have skipped a lot here. I really ramped up the vibrancy of the colours which seemed to work really well. Having the eye yellow and glowing added balance to the canvas, bringing over the yellow that is predominantly on the left side. I played with some blurring effects on the main and tail fluff, and created a simple sense of distance on the back part of the horse by colour picking the background behind it and painting over it with low opacity. I also moved the position of one of the front legs as it was totally bothering me! ...still is.... grrr..

6. It may not be the quickest way of painting, but if it gets THESE results, please continue with this method. I have looked at other artist's work which shows great promise, but is spoiled by not doing these routines you describe- specifically the lighting, which is particularly good in your work, but all those little principles of balance and direction that you explain here in the Step by Steps- details that would be SO much harder to fine-tune if you just "painted everything straight away

From 5 - 6, it's just really more detailing, and being more confident with your strokes. I tend to struggle some times with this, but it's just a case of keeping going, and if you're struggling reach out for more references.

Keep going is the hardest part for me (I got ADHD). After ~30 minutes my concentration is gone and I can't ignore how shitty my work is

Ahh gosh, i can only imagine. I mean, I'm bad as it is, especially recently. I can only paint for like 20 minutes, then will get distracted and have to do something else. Its a vicious cycle. I find it hard to focus sometimes.
