As always, these are little step by step ramblings of how I went about painting and how everything came together. If anyone has any questions or clarifications on a stage, please ask! Also - there is no right or wrong way to paint! This is just how I created this particular piece - I hope it helps in some way.

Finished piece is part of a series of commissions

1 - Messy sketch on separate layer. Neutral background colour.

2 - Refining the sketch a bit more to decide how I want the dragon to look. Using cloud, foggy brushes I painted them in the background on low opacity to help give me some sense of scene. I can't sketch on a blank background!

3 - Keeping the sketch above, added some colour and markings.

4 - Painted some shadows using a multiply layer style.

5 - Decided on a scene idea so went back to the background - jungley with warm sunlight piercing through. This would give me the warm light from above but I wanted something to offset it, so I thought about using green mist on the ground so I can reflect green light onto the underside of the dragon. I knew I wanted some sort of foliage in the very foreground so just doddled something on at this point.

6 - Working into the scene a bit more. My highlights on the dragon were getting too washed out. I used to do this a lot - trying to over-highlight colours just ends up a pale mess. You need to darken it and bring the saturation up.

7 - Detailing a little - when painting this my hands were messed up pretty bad, so I relied on lots of texture brushes rather than fine detail.

8 - Final steps! Lots more refining, but keeping that messy effect.
