Description

I'm still super happy with this one - this style was something a little different and is definitely something I want to experiment again with in future.

No still images for this one I'm afraid as it was a commission piece!

1 - Rough outline - simple sketch on separate layer

2 - Getting an idea of scene colours on a layer under the lines. I was thinking grasses, blue sky, sunny day. There's not too much thought here.

3 - Started roughing out the cat's colours and form. Still using the same brush as the background. Added a few paint drops with a splatter brush.

4 - Continuation of previous step. Being super messy, just getting several different hues and such down as a base to work from.

5 - Bring out a fur brush. Adding a slight hue jitter and colour picking from what I've laid down in the previous steps. Focusing on getting the right fur directions, but not too uniform. Smaller brush on the face as shorter fur.

6 - Background needed depth, so I shifted to blue hues and desaturated parts in the back to give this illusion. Added more form to the cat, going over with overall shadow and highlight. I tend to use two overlay layers for these, but play with the opacity and colour. For shadows I used some green tones.

7 - Removed sketch layer as no longer needed. Detailing over the top of the fur to really unify everything. Bring in more green from the surrounding grass in the shadows to unify the cat and the background. Add in glare to the cat's eyes to bring them to life and whiskers on the very top.

8 - Final tone tweaks and sharpening. Cropped the canvas to create more interest with the cat not being central, and added a few white highlights.

Finished piece -

3 - Pick some colours and just go for it! Haha. It's just about laying stuff down, starting to build up structure. Be messy, don't really think it through that much. Best thing to do is to practice, get used to looking at something and being able to translate that onto what you're doing. I picked a grey-ish brown base at first, roughly going over everything, and then started adding stuff ontop. First, just one colour for the orange, one for the white. Then two more for each, one slightly darker one slightly lighter (make sure you change the hue slightly!) And just keep messing around from there. Again, really don't think it through. Do it fast. You'll go over and refine later.

That's a very in-depth breakdown, I can see this helping out a lot of people! Not me, I'm just a cartoonist who only sees in flat colours and bold lines, but any up-and-comers can learn a lot from this!

Also, the picture is gorgeous, of course!

Nice work!

How to draw a cat:
Step 1: Draw a circle
Step 2: Draw the rest of the cat

In all seriousness this is really helpful thank you!

These spam comments are so tiring. I've seen people disable deviation comments entirely because of it.

Thank you for making this! I'm not too experienced with digital painting, so this'll help me quite a lot. <33
I'm still trying to find what style suits the way I draw in terms of painting, but I'll try to keep this process in mind.

I don't feel like I have a style at all! I just do what feels right, and constantly try new things and experiment. I think that's the best way to grow as an artist. I used to get so caught up on the fact that I had to 'find a style' and stick to it so people can recognise my artwork. But I just would get too stressed about it and it limited me creatively.

Far better to just do whatever you want!

And thank you!

I completely agree with you. ^^

And, you're welcome! I personally believe that I should start experimenting more with painting, so your learning from your process will be very helpful for me when I do.

I'm glad it's a help! I try and do it with most pieces I paint usually - I'm just running a bit behind, haha.
