Description

Ahh, this was such a good one! Looking back, I wish I hadn't just relied on rain brushes as it looks a bit cheap, but it still worked. Still, I'm very happy with how the armoury scales came out.

1- My sketches take me way too long! But the more effort you put into the sketch, the easier the painting will be, so it's always worth taking your time. I've put each horse sketch on a separate layer, with a bottom background layer and just a basic block colouring to help the idea of the depth I'm going to try and create with the piece. Horizon and vanishing lines helped me with sizing the horses appropriately.

2- Simple gradient for the sky, deciding on a colour scheme. The rain and smoke - these were just me playing about, getting an overall idea for the mood I'm trying to create in the finished piece - these were ontop and I kept switching them off again while painting.

3- Adding in some basic shading colours, both quite desaturated - a brown and a grey-ish blue. Again, not 100% sure on where I was going with lighting here.

4- Creating a highlight - bringing in another colour - a pale blue.

5- Getting into it properly now. I combined my layers (other than the top rain and dust) and just went for it, being aware that I was using the orangey dust colour to reflect onto the underside of the unicorn, with the paler blue highlight coming from above. This helped so much in creating a 3d effect.

6- More detailing and refining. Really pushed the contrast here (maybe a bit too much!) and went for red eyes and green mane. Went over the back horses with dust clouds to help portray distance and speed. I also blurred them slightly.

7 - Pushed contrast a bit more (my eyes!) and tweaked colours, introducing more interest with blue/purple tones. Added in dust particles and bouncing rain. Again, wish I'd done more with this, and maybe gone a bit less mad with the contrast! But still, happy with the result!

Looks great to see the progression of your art in these step by steps, those war unicorns really remind me of the purple rhino knight horses.

Oh gosh yeah! I was most definitely influenced by them, haha. Love all the different horse armours in Berserk!

Yeah berserk is really smart with their conceptual designs for arsenal and beasts, taking inspiration from classic medieval traits and polishing them in gore!
