Ballad 1 - Castle of Sand
Part 1 > Part 2 > Part 3 > Part 4 > Part 5 > Part 6 > Part 7 > Part 8 > Conclusion
((Whooo-eeee, so this is the last proper comic page for Enid's story during this phase of the Tonpelli disaster In the Scatterstar-Isles ARPG, a new monthly prompt will be unveiled soon and I think I have told enough of Enid's story *for now*. Time to wait and see what next month has to offer and how Enid will carry on. There is one 'splash-page' style image I might do which rounds off some of the stuff brought up in this entry, so hopefully I can get that sorted over the weekend <3 I left the three floating panels unshaded, so that they stood out, but not sure if they stand out too much now xD))
There was no way of telling how long Enid had laid there amongst the rubble and debris. It felt like eons for her, but it could have been mere minutes in reality. All she could remember was the harsh flash of blue in her vision as she realised a targeting laser was being aimed right at her. Her brief glimpse across to the opposite rooftop revealed a tech-touched Undyre priming their weapon.
Enid narrowly missed the main blast, but the force of air knocked her (and a whole section of the tiling) clear off the roof. It was only some canvas awning on the backside of the building that saved her from a broken back or worse, and when the tiling followed her but landed at just the right angle so that she wasn't squished...well, that had to be more than just lucky. If Enid had been at all religious or superstitious, she might have said that someone had been looking out for her.
She slowly blinked awake. The sky had changed colour. There was still the infernal glow that said fires were still consuming the island, but there was now a pre-dawn lightness beginning to seep from the horizon. At least an hour must have passed. There was no fire here, and no immediate threat from tech-touched. But if the fire didn't get you, the thick smoke and ash might. She could taste the bitterness in her mouth, made all the more unpleasant by the addition of the metallic taste of blood.
No one came to find me.
Enid summoned the strength to prop herself up on her elbows and try to look around. The world swirled but she could just about make out what she hoped was a drinking fountain...
She might be hallucinating, it definitely looked like her Eftlike was talking to the two stowaway Hivegliders...after which they scurried off as if on a mission. She convinced herself that it was all her imagination, an attempt to take her fragile mind off the searing pain in her thigh, an attempt to keep the floodgates closed. But as she looked down at the gash on her leg, her strength gave out.
Everything she had seen but had managed to ignore due to her single-minded need to find Cirrus. It all flashed in front of her minds eye like a movie from hell. The fires as they devoured the city, the places she had seen in their vibrancy only hours before. The haunting, blank eyes of the tech-touched Undyre as they committed all kinds of atrocities against their kith and kin. And the bodies...those who didn't escape the fires or the tech-touched...mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers...children. None were spared.
All that grief and horror. Wasted life. And what for?
Enid crumpled. She screamed and sobbed and made every unearthly noise inbetween. Mab simply sat beside her, doing her best to calm her, but even with a limited range of emotions, she knew this to be truly primal. This was fear and sadness and loss, all mixed together in a deadly cocktail that could leave Enid dead inside if she wasn't careful.
Why would you choose to fight that? How could you ever hope to succeed?
Time became stuck and un-stuck once more and Enid was lost to the throws of grief and fear for her life. Mab kept her vigil, eagerly awaiting the return of the two Hivegliders...
