You can do smaller projects in between owed art, if you sense yourself getting bored with what you're working on. However, I would advice smaller projects that can get done in a few days or a week, and not bigger ones.

The reason why I don't join auctions often is because often the winner gets chosen when I go to bed, so if someone is awake while I'm asleep they're gonna be the last one to bid, so they win.

Yeah me too. I can see it happen in a tense situation. You know, if you've ever been scared and you held your breath to listen better? Yeah, maybe you've been so occupied by thoughts that you kinda forgot that you held your breath and then you become surprised that you let it out in the first place? Like one reason I saw for disliking it was because it couldn't happen, cause you would be aware that you where holding your breath.
