I think you misunderstood me.
I don't think that character actually was gay, but he sure acted like it.
Yes, he was playing the mainstream guy, but homosexuality is 'in' right now and all over T.V. shows like Doctor Who (or better yet, Torchwood).
So it would make sense if he was gay.
