Description
For those who have stumbled onto this posting randomly, this is the first step of a wax carving tutorial of a ring for jewelry fabrication. The wax tubes in the photos are known as ring blanks. Carving rings from tubes like these instead of solid blocks has a couple of advantages, as you can see they come in many different sizes and shapes for producing the more typical forms of rings. Using a wax tube will save carving time as well as time with layout of patterns. The cut off piece of tubing in the center of the photo will be my ring carving. I have used a small saw to cut the wax tube to the size of the ring that I am going to carve. The center holes of the wax blanks come very small (about ring size 4), so you have to carve the inside diameter to the size of ring that you want to produce. The tool that you can see with the red coating is a type of mandrel that has a blade for reaming out these ring blanks. It has lines on it representing the different ring sizes. You simply insert it into the wax form and twist it to remove small amounts of material until you have the desired size of ring that you wish to produce. I carved this particular ring to a size 12.5. If you look closely you can see that I have also used a small ruler and scribed center points to all sides of the ring. This is crucial since I will be working subtractively, if you can't keep track of what you are carving away, you are probably F#?&!ng it up.Related content

Hi, I have a question. If you want to make 1000 rings, are you casting master piece (silver, gold)? Or are you making molds from wax master?
Thanks,
Martin

Great tutorial! If you don't mind, could you tell me the model/make of your flex shaft? I'd like to purchase one as well and am not sure what is a sufficient RPM, amp, ect for wax carving. thnx for any guidance!

You can order them online. If there are no supply stores near you, just do a search for jewelry supply. I order form [link]

oh Thanks for the fast reply & the link, I'll use it as my last resort. It would be really expensive to import anything to Egypt cause our customs are high, so I'll ask around first & if not I'll use your link. Hope I can make your skull ring soon, It's magnificent... a masterpiece
One more question If you don't mind, at the end of the tutorial you said casting silver, what is that?? Do you still use the wax for that, wouldn't silver be very hot for the wax?

Do an online search for "lost wax casting" it is a very old method for casting metals. Essentially your wax sculpture is encased in a certain type of plaster mold, the wax is burned out and the melted metal is poured into the negative space of the mold. therefore your wax is lost and replaced by a petal piece.

Woooow thanks for commenting didn't really think you'll comment, let alone explain all that.
I'll definitely research that, but for my first attempt using your tutorial I think I'll send it to a professional jewelery maker, I'll hate to ruin my hard work

The tool above is a Matt wax ring tube sizer
[link]
It shaves the interior of the ring. Go slowly and always measure with another ring mandrel marked with the size you want. I have several ring sizing mandrels and believe it or their markings vary.

what size wax ring tubes do you normally use?

I use all of the different sizes based on the size and shape of the piece I want to make. for the large skull rings I tend to use the large tubes with the square side to it.
