Illustration of a Circus Act.

I chose to create a character based on a bird handler i'd looked at in source material and research on circuses. I exaggerated the length of the character's arms as in the original photo the lady was balancing loads of birds on her arms. I also tried to add in a bit of humour and irreverance to the character by having her very long arms propped up by hoops which are on fire as you might see in circuses. We also had to illustrate the characters thoughts, so I have the lady thinking that she is going to cook her pigeons in a pie later. I tried to make the whole thing look like a garish circus poster, hence the primary colours and banner, but I had some criticism on the use of bright yellow as the background. In a previous idea during the project I made a collage out of circus posters and text so I used that behind the character and as the border to make it look comtemporary.

I got mixed criticism on this piece but I am fairly pleased with it as it's not my normal way of working and I don't usually design characters.
