Description While working on "Mechanical", I discovered how good the basic noise texture looked, and it reminded me of a process called case hardening, to create harder alloys.

I love that node. It's probably one of my most used nodes/textures in my workflow. I like that handle, looks good. One thing I would say is that the handle looks a little too much like ceramic and less like metal.

The handle was supposed to look like plastic. I wanted a kind of army-style cheap machete. I could have turned down the bump node a litle and applied less gloss to make it look like wood, but I didn't really want that...

Also, I love the bump node. The background is basically just a noise texture and a bump. I guess you knew that, why am I telling you that?

Oops, did I say handle? *Looks at original comment* Oh, I did.Β In my defense: I hadn't had my caffeine yet. Anyhow, the blade looks like ceramic is what I meant to say. Check out Thornton Strolia's videos on Youtube, he has a great series on making advanced shaders in cycles:Β www.youtube.com/channel/UCvbCv… It's a 3 video series (if you don't count the intro video). The first video is about making flat materials, like blued steel. The second video is all about making those glossy shaders, and the third one is about organic shaders. I must warn you though, he uses *looks around* *Shudder* Photoshop. I hope no one heard that.

Oh, yes, that does, too. I am still a little kid when it comes to blender, so all qritique is welcome. Thank you for the link!Β
Also, PS isn't bad at all. It's just that I like Gimp more...

I never said Photoshop was bad, it's a good piece of software. I just don't like it. GIMP FTW!

i didn't know the light refraction was caused by hardening, i though it's to make it stainless

Well, for stainless steel, discoloration wouldn't make much sense. Β

how is the process made anyway? using heat and chimicals? on the coloration is just because of the thermal process?

Case hardening means encasing softer metals with hard metals for more strenght. You can read more about it here:Β en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Case_har…
