As usual, Wayne, it is the subtle touches that make this image shine.
I read the remarks of fans on the pages of the artists I watch, and think to myself that the unending parade of simple-minded gushing must get tedious after not very long at all. Kudos and accolades are good, I know, but to my way of thinking, seeing one comment after another that offers nothing more insightful than another "ooh" or "aah" seems like it would have to lead one to believe that most viewers simply cannot see the things in a drawing like this that really make it special, or can't be bothered to look at an artist's work closely and carefully enough to really see what the artist worked so hard to relate visually.
Your anatomy, pencil technique, control of perspective, motion, composition... all are top notch. None of those things, in my opinion, all of which you do so well, are what makes your work special, Wayne. I honestly wish that all your fans were able to see the little things, like the delicate nuance of her expression, the flow of her hair, the finely detailed depth in the fist, the absolute control of the fabrics, and the way they drape so as to perfectly accentuate the contours of her figure... small aspects of the over-all drawing that you handle with such absolute control and grace.
Many many artists have decent control over anatomy. And I know, form previous remarks you have made, that you feel many artists have more "flair" than you feel your work possesses. But, I'll tell you what I think is the important difference (all in your favor) between you and an artist like, for example, Jim Lee:
Jim Lee has a much more definitive (or at least; instantly recognizable) style than you do. You most certainly have a distinctive style which is all your own... but the true beauty of your style is that it NEVER interferes with your being able to illustrate ANYTHING. The story telling in your illustration is so perfectly transparent it transcends style. Jim Lee's style is so eccentric, it can have a strong detrimental effect on his ability to illustrate a certain objects or scenes. Also, Jim's style is so much a part of the way he draws that you either have to love it or hate it. In your case, no matter what you illustrate, not only can the average viewer appreciate your work for art's sake, but your technique is so strong that whatever you draw can be instantly absorbed and appreciated for the story that it tells. This is a rare ability, even among top notch illustrators.
Your drawing technique and style is superb, Wayne, but your remind me in many ways of an old school artist who I not only admire tremendously, but he was also one of the prime inspirational sources that drove me as a child to learn to draw. I am speaking of Burne Hogarth. As beautiful as his drawing and inking style was, one of his principle strengths was that he could illustrate ANY scene, ANY object, ANY composition, and make it wholly accessible, absolutely believable, and instantly "readable" by the viewer. In much the same way that someone like Steven Spielberg works, in that his technique is so near perfect, and invisible... so it is that the average viewer usually never realizes how important the artist's technical/vocational abilities are to the impact of the final culmination of their work.
I've seen some of the more in depth, intricate, finely detailed work you've done. I admire it all. But I have to say, I believe I will always appreciate more... be far more impressed by, the amazing work you do on the simplest illustrations. In drawings such as this one, your sheer ability as a consummate illustrator, with total control of his craft, really sines through.
