I usually just fill it in and experiment the hell out of it(like using lighter colors from the bottom and darker ones on the top or visa versa) 
either that or I just watch a whole bunch of speedpaints, they tend to help out a lot since you can kinda guess what they did for certain things, then you can always do the same but add your own little spin to it.
I try to observe anime and stuff like that as well (for example the orange one on the bottom, that one was kinda based off of the artwork from this anime called Noragami)
