I actually think it would be nice if Rainbow Dash was gay. I don't see a lot of homosexual characters on tv because it's such a controversial topic. of course, I doubt kids would be able to understand it. plus, the show focuses on friendship, not boys...

Based on people I know personally, someone who's gay or bi-sexual can first manifest those feelings at a very young age (even if we're talking little girl crushes on Penny from Inspector Gadget or punk Storm from the 80s X-Men comics). Meanwhile a great number of kids, such as myself, end up learning what "gay" is in elementary school. And not from responsible adults, but from other children on the schoolyard and learning it as a hateful slur.
I'm not sure there would be a problem with kids understanding the concept of someone falling in love with someone of the same sex, any more how opposite-sex love is presented to them (particularly when there are kids storybooks that do just that). At least I don't see a problem other than that our general culture needs to catch up with the ethical reality of being queer.
But with that said...

Or, given the topic at hand, romance in general, though it goes without saying that I agree. At very least it suggests it is a bad idea to do romance between members of the mane cast, though outside of that I could easily conceive of how the topic might be tackled within the specific themes and tone of the show.

when I said "I doubt kids would be able to understand it," I was speaking from my own life experiences. as far as I can remember, my parents never said anything to me about man/man or woman/woman romantic relationships being wrong. (they're both very accepting people.) but one time, my sister told me about how a friend of hers went to a woman/woman wedding. (I think I was about 9 at the time.) this was completely bizarre to me, since I always saw marriage to be between a man and a woman.
when I said the show doesn't focus on boys, I meant that literally too. besides Spike, the show doesn't have ANY male lead characters.

The funny thing is, last night, a friend of mine showed me a clip of Star Trek with that "Q" guy, (I'm not really a "Trekkie" personally, but apparently Q was the voice of Discord) that this comic is referencing.
