Hmm...I did enjoy Undertale a lot.Β But at the same time...a sequel to a game that wrapped up so nicely just seems odd.Β I'm sure it's a fun game at least combat wise.Β But I can't help but think that a sequel was just unneeded.Β It looks like he was just trying to cash in on Undertale's popularity by making this.
Because of that, I don't even see a need to play it, especially with Smash coming out in less than a month.

1) Deltarune is FREE (or at least the Ch. currently released is)
2) Deltarune seems to be an Alt. universe from Undertale, there is some limited crossover such as returning caricters, but they seem like alternate versions of those caricters. Toby Fox even sead as much himself on twitter.
3) Deltarune has different themes to Undertale, even if they share a few macanics

I am so confused by it all... like I liked it and disliked it and wanted more and wanted nothing all at the same time. So many conflicting feelings!Β
I did like what Toby Fox said on his long post, that UNDERTALE will still stand alone as something special that he won't try to repeat.Β
But again, that confused me when all those guys were in the story but not the people we knew.Β

It's like the whole world is an anagram, with characters and their roles and relationships switched wildly around.

Not to mention the flip from making your choices have strong impacts to being completely irrelevant in the "real" world. I would be willing to bet however that the game does in fact take place before the events of undertale. Many theories point to it being durring the events in an alternate timeline, but I believe it is before based on many different factors. I think that this world that we go through is potentially the "correct" outcome of the experiment that gaster was performing. He may have been trying to alter the timeline to make it so that humans and monsters never went to war... and succeeded.
If that is correct then I think what we are seeing is a leaking of other timelines (with a strong direction towards undertale). Also it would explain the different relationships that were built, monsters being secluded to their own town, and the disappearance of certain characters.

i don't know how to feel about it, i just started playing it, it's pretty fun, but...uh, how do i feel about previous characters, like Toriel and Alphys, that i met so far, is this continuation, if then, where is frisk? I AM CONFUSED ON SO MANY LEVELS, and a little bit sad, help T.TΒ

I ended up being disillusioned by the end of my playthrough, feeling bothered by the reappearance of familiar characters. When the game focused on the original characters and concepts, I was quite into it and invested, but then, ironically, it was the revised Undertale cast that disappointed me.Β
Thing is, Undertale is one of my favourite games ever, and I say that with no sense of hyperbole. I love this game. However, something important about Undertale that I enjoyed was the message that every experience is individual and your choices shape the world around you. Even if you regret a choice and try to reset, no memory is completely erased clean. Imprints linger.Β
So when those same characters appear in a game whose conceit is "your choice do not matter," it runs afoul of the first game's message. In fact, it kind of overrules the "you shape the world around you" message and can imply that individual experiences with Undertale were not necessarily valid.Β
I'm not saying my analysis of Deltarune is correct but instead of being excited to see characters I love, I was disappointed and frustrated with their personalities in this "alternate" space. Honestly, much of this game read like fan fiction. At first, it literally reminded me of a fan fiction I've read recently, but then just became a strange fanfic all its own. I would have preferred Deltarune if Toby had made the story and cast completely original.Β

dude, that's a really interesting take on it. I think Toby's talent is being able to subvert what we know and expect of video games, and for that reason I'm excited to see where he goes with the whole "your choice doesn't matter" thing. A sequel is meant to expand upon the themes of the original piece, or put them in a completely new light. This game seems much more mature, almost as if Undertale grew up and it's starting to face the cold realities of the world. And I mean, Deltarune isn't WRONG about the whole futility thing; if anything, it's treating the game more like our own reality, and that's something really interesting to see.Β
Also yeah, the returning cast was pretty vanilla, exactly what we'd expect, but I'm sure it'll be taken in a new direction soon enough.

See, I absolutely love the new message that "your choices don't matter." Typically in stories, especially video games, it really doesn't matter what you choose, the story will continue as it is intended, whether you agree or not. After a game like Undertale, that goes out of its way to show how much your choices affect things, it's incredibly interesting to be in a game where things aren't in your control. I love this juxtaposition.Β
My issue stems from having the same characters in both games because the message of "your choices don't matter" can be read as "however you fans think of the characters, it's likely wrong. Here's how I envisioned them and I finally have a medium to showcase my intention without explicitly saying so." Now, I realize this is a harsh assumption of Toby and his creation. I have absolutely no clue what his intentions are and he is VERY good at subverting expectations. I would be happy to be proven wrong on this interpretation. It's just that I have seen just how toxic fans have been when the characters and story were up for interpretation. Now we have a chapter, however tangential, that implies several things about the UT characters, and it just makes me wonder why he included them. Why not go with a completely original cast?Β
It doesn't help that I did not like how the UT characters were portrayed in Deltarune. There was something off about all of them. I won't go into detail unless you want me to rant about it but yeah, I really hope my viewing of the game ends up being incorrectly cynical. I'm not hyped for future installments but I would like to know where this goes.Β
