Description
Here we have the first dragon in this strange little series (unless you include the marsh dragon) that is not based in any existing folklore or mythology. The grellot (Quattoralae insidiator) is a small, agile dragon characterized by hindlimbs with skin stretched between the inner toe to the base of the tail, forming a structure that functions similarly to the tail of a bird. Also notable are the enlarged forelimbs, which the grellot uses to grab prey and climb trees. It usually hunts by leaping down on small animals like chipmunks and sparrows from a higher branch. Coloration ranges from a blue-gray to greyish green to dark gray. Grellots are mostly solitary creatures (the reason there's so many in the picture is to show them from different angles), and mate in the spring. Their high pitched chirps and warbles carry though the treetops to advertise sex, strength, territorial boundaries and desire to mate or be left alone. The female lays one or two eggs at a time in the stolen nest of a bird, after she has finished eating its eggs. Young are able to fly shortly after birth, but are allowed to remain in the parent's territory for several days before they are chased off.
They are native to forested areas across the western united states, with individuals living in colder climates migrating towards the coast in anticipation of winter.
