Description Julianna, a little girl with the most severe case of Treacher Collin's syndrome the world has ever seen. Because my reference photo was really unclear and pixel-y, some of the details are from my own face, and this is how my hair looked while I was making the picture. We also have the same eye color and moles. I used pink because Julianna's like 7 or 8 and girls that age are often really into that color. I didn't want it to be like a monster portrait; more sort of fun and kitsch and a little effeminate.

Media: markers, goauche and ink on color paper. And Photoshop for the cheesy twinkle in her eyes. (I'll add this to the real portrait later...)
Size: About 60 cm tall.

i saw the documentary about julianna on tv last year.. she was only about 4 or 5 in that show, but she seemed like a little girl who was interested in everything going on around her, like a lot of children are naturally inquisative. i think if she saw a portrait of herself then she would like looking at it. when i was little i liked looking at portraits becuase i didn't understand how artists could use colours like green and blue and still make it look real. i think it would be really cool for you to paint this again when she is at a different age, so you had one of her as a girl, and one as a woman.

Maybe I could paint one of her as a teen, too...and then one of her as an old woman. Oooh I'm looking forward to this now!

haha yeah...
ok just give me your address and i'll send you a postcard in 15 years time as a reminder
if i paint a portrait of one of my friends i'll often do it about four times, because everyone's faces change a lot in their late teens and it's nice to capture that

That poor girl will have a hard life ahead of her, not because of any disability that may arise, but because of the torment she will get from society. It is sickening how horrid people can be.

It is wonderful that you drew her picture. Have you thought about sending her parents a copy of it with some type of note explaining the artistic significance?

You know before I read the description I immediately thought to myself "Does nobody see the resemblance between this piece of art, and Sloth from the 1985 adventure film The Goonies?"

Then realized the incredible work and effort gone into it, and with a bit of research into treacher collins I came to realize what true dynamics and originality of a portrait, and for some reason it make me think twice about what I was looking at (i usually fu*koff to be honest)

Bless this incredible work and my hats off to you, flunkmaster. If this ever makes it to her, I think they will feel honoured that you've done this.

What a beautiful drawing. I know that the nurse/nanny who helps take care of Julianna has a website and perhaps a e-mail address where you can send her a link to this (If you wanted to ).
//hopefully she did not take down the e-mail address like she did the guestbook. So many trolls and other SOBS posted horrible things about this girl. Very sad.

Great job all around. Love the colors.

I applaud you for painting her.

Yes, her story is tragic, but from what I've read, she's much loved and very safe. That's much more than many children in third world countries receive.

I've seen her story before, and it was unlike anything I've ever witnessed. God bless her and her family; despite her struggles, she lives a wonderful and full life. I applaud you for this piece; it's beautifully executed and captures Julianna's innocence very well.

It's amazing what even life throws at us sometimes... Humans have a slight tendency toward a predetermined ego of perfection, yet when our own genetics betray us... then what? I recall seeing this on one of the Discovery Channels, may have been The Learning Channel, a number of months ago and was just amazed... What an odd but inspiring story - that people can abandon the vanity of the world and do whatever they can for what is theirs and what they are to nurture.

I instantly recognized this when I signed into dA this morning - and thought, "Well I'll be..." It's rare to find artists' portrayals of certain events in society that are loud enough to be heard, yet still unseen...

Your use of colors is really nifty. Wish I'd elaboration, but know that it is good.

My god . . . I didn't know such a syndrome/disease was even out there. It's awful . . . I saw pictures of her as a baby and she didn't even look remotely human . . .

It's amazing what they can do with reconstructive suregery these days, but I wish they could do more . . .

I think that it's a beautiful portrait and she definately deserves to be painted.
Just like many other people, I feel really emotional about this because I've always had a deep sense of respect for people who live with what society claims "physical disfigurations". A nice addiction to new kind of awareness.

Thank you for this beautiful deviation.

I had no idea what Treacher Collins syndrome was when I clicked on it, so I had to Wiki it. Juliana's story is extremely inspirational.

Next year, I begin my studies to become a geneticist. Her story reminds me of why I chose the path that I did.

I think it's awesome that her parents decided right from the start that they were going to love this child, and that they were going to enable her and help her succeed.

And thank you, I'm very excited to be a geneticist :]
I was first inspired to be by my cousin, who has cystic fibrosis.
