Gem Knight AU! This takes place sometime after Gaster left his kids and before Papyrus became a knight. There's around a 5-year-difference in age between him and Sans. They are both really young here, maybe 11 and 16. Papyrus would adopt a hero persona to make it easier to cope with the monstrous responsibility and to reassure his little brother that they were safe. A kid would not be able to shoulder so much, but a hero?

(this is not to say that he is delusional or unaware of his own limits, but he goes an extra mile to cover them up. Is this good for him in the long run? debatable.)

Gaster left the brothers some issues as a parting gift before he vanished.
