I'm doing these questions as separate asks.

Monsters have a long history of cutting gems. Before the war and the banishment to the island, gems served as ornaments as well, however, some of these gems would be repurposed as souls when resources ran low. The caves under the island have a rich supply of crystals, but it is not endless. When cutting the gem, it is a priority to avoid sharp tips or points, as these could chip and any damage to the gem itself also hurts the monster's physical form.

After the gem is cut, it is placed in a socket or wrapped. Drilling the gem is not advised, as there is a risk of fracturing the gem and it might make the gem prone to damage. A bit more info on the souls here and on the specific cuts here .

The gem cut by Gaster in this "guide" will belong to Papyrus.
