Description
Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, JapanBefore entering the temple, everyone has to perform a short and simple cleansing ritual, in order to be pure for the gods. First, they have to wash both hands with the water, using the cup. Then, they drink some water and without swallowing any of it, they spit it to the ground. Then they can wash their face (not everyone did this last part so it might be different from region to region). This way, both the interior and the exterior of the human body is cleansed and the visitor may visit the temple being pure from everyday dirt and sin.
