Description
I really like how does ponies, so I decided to use [link] as a reference (and pretty much copying the pose outright), and see if I could emulate her style and learn more about shading and making pony heads look good in 3d from a 3/4 view. I still can't seem to make hair look good. I hope to be able to apply some of the things I've learned in doing this to my own art soon. ^_^Everyone should watch if they don't already, her art is incredible, and just keeps getting better.

Interesting style. If I were to critique on the style in relation to 's I'd say Scoot's hair is pretty flat, the wing shading looks pretty weird and that you need some work on hard edges. Right now a lot of the shading looks like it's made with a soft brush when it should have some hard edges to differentiate between different body parts. (for example look at the part where the head overlaps the neck) This is visible in other areas too and just gives it a generally messy look. Nice to see you try new things though. ^^

Scoot's hair is *definitely* pretty flat, as I said in the description, I still can't seem to make hair look good. I'm still trying to figure out how exactly wing shading works, and though I think this is probably better than any of my previous attempts at it, it's definitely something I still need to work on. The overall shading was done with a soft brush, but I tried to make part separations more clear as I finished the picture up, though looking at it now, I may have accidentally left the brush soft when I meant to make it harder, making it look a bit blurry. I did at least manage to make all of the parts easily discernible thanks to the large shade differences between parts, they just look kinda blurry because of the softness of the brush. All told, shading is definitely something I still need work on. ^_^

Other than backgrounds, trying to improve my shading and general pony forms is one of the things I've really been trying to work on when I could. The side view ponies like I've been doing for Pony Tales are actually something I rarely do anymore, I just find it's a good place to start when working with unfamiliar ponies. Also they're reasonably quick to do, unlike shaded things like this, and this was just a study of 's style to see what I could learn from it. Completely original things take even longer (which is why I have so many unfinished pictures on my computer >_<).
