Description
My first real attempt at doing a pony, basically in show style, but using shading instead of outlines. How'd I do?(I think it came out pretty well considering I know virtually nothing about shading...)

I like it, too. But I agree some outlines could've made it even better! =]

I like the feel of it, and how the lack of outlines make it easier on the eyes. Good job

In my opinion the shading is too blurry on the legs, we can't clearly see the 2 legs. The separation should be more marked.
The rest is fine though. As 'Pax said, we can really guess where the light come from, but for a fisrt attempt, this is really good, congrats!

Not bad for a first try but... did you use the blur tool here? When I look at the body, mane and the tail I feel like I need to put on some glasses. For shading I recommend blending. There needs a bit more shading around her ears, on the mane and some on the body, from the mane. Also, I can't really see where the light is supposed to come from. Use more shades, it's a bit hard at some places. Shading is pretty hard at the beginning but gets much more easier the more you use it (ofc).
I don't know if you planned to make this more realistic or anything, but try to skip the lightings on the iris and make it darker at the top and brighter at the bottom. Use less opacity when you make the highlights on the eyes overall, if you look at your own eyes in the mirror, and observe the highlights on them, you'll understand.
The muzzle is a bit "tall" and the nostrils are a bit too small. Her front hooves look a tiny bit smaller than the hind ones and her butt is a bit too long(though that might just be me overanalyzing and being too tired.
It feels like since you were focusing on making the shades instead of outlines, you got a little bit sloppy on the form of the pony itself. But other than these (actually) small details it's a good first try, especially since you know nothing about shading, observe some real life stuff! Don't take this critique as 100% correct because I might be wrong at some parts!

No, I went to reply, but I couldn't think of how to actually word what I was going to say...
The short version is probably: I used nothing but the select/deselect and airbrush tools in SAI, and eyes are hard...I looked in a mirror, but my eyes are multicolored, so I couldn't see if there was anything like the eye highlights or not...I derped and completely forgot to make the top of the iris darker...and, well, you know me, long pony is long and my muzzles rarely look quite right. ^_^

Nope, I've actually never used the blur tool in SAI.

Not sure if I want to see the combination of blur and airbrush haha

I'd imagine it would be more eyestrain than should be possible...^_^
