Description The first time I saw the Richard Avedon's iconic photograph of a Burmese python wrapped around Nastassja Kinski, it snaked it's way to the part of my brain form where things never go away!
This is an attempt to recreate the same using DAZ studio & LuxRender via reality.
I haven't tried to morph her face (I'm not a big fan of celebrity morphs), but rather tried to emulate the feel of the image.
The thing that I miss is the flicking tongue of the snake, but somehow the morphing python can't do that anymore, the morphs just don't show up anywhere in DAZ.
1Genesis, 1MorphingPython, 1Softbox (from the brilliant RealityLightSystem by Callad) & 1Cove for the backdrop.
C&C most welcome.
Cheers!

Aging myself... I recall when this was the cover image of American Photographer magazine.

Seems this cover image and the movie Cat People came around at about the same time. (The movie was a werewolf story for cat lovers, Kinski starred in it - forget who else but being a dirty old man even at that age I didn't care. Can't recall how good the movie was. But I remember it and the story line... so must have been more to teh movie than Kinski for me to remember it.)

You definitely captured the pose, expression, lighting and textures. Great job on the 'gravity' around her abdomen area specifically but overall over too (flattening of arms, legs fingers where they meet the ground plane).

The SSS (or reflection) on her shoulders and arm is a bit much but that is a personal taste. And it's really not too much, a bit less than a tad and more than a smidgeon off IMO. I know those precise measurements don't help much. Looks good on the face, legs other skin. Point is not a big think and it could just be me and the monitor I am using.

I think the bracelet in your image handled better than in the orginal photo. (Original looks like a 'clamp' type bracelet, very stiff, almost not on her arm.)

Too bad the tongue isn't there. (Can you say post work? I'd be tempted to try.) That snake's tongue near her ear made the image from a story telling aspect.

But still a powerful piece nicely reproduced as photorealistic CGI.

Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Robert!
Yes, it was on the magazine cover and after that all over the print media
I remember seeing CatPeople at an impressionable age, and remember it very well, esp. Malcom McDowell's performance. Kinski looked so fresh and innocent in that film, perfect for the role!
For the body I used the smoothing + collision feature of DAZ studio coupled with lots of morphs and tweaks and a pinch of deformers. So am happy that it seems to have worked out
I hear you about the specularity on her shoulders and arms, but since there was only one light source in the image I had to settle between having having her legs, which are further away from the light, get a bit darker or have a little more shine on her shoulders. So it's somewhere inbetween. I guess somehow it seems to add a bit more depth to the figure, as the one without the 'shine' looked a bit too flat and it's easy to end up with 3D renders that look 'flat'.
You're right about the bracelet, The original is a clamp type, and I used a full one with some push modifier applied. I actually toyed with the idea of modelling one that'd be like the original, but that'd take a bit of time and decided against it.
& yeah the tongue, that was one thing in the original image that added dynamism, and I miss it, but I'm not a big fan of postwork, and somehow believe that the software ought to give me a full result(idiotic, isn't it?)so I think the tongue is a no go. I think way back the morphs for the fangs and the tongue used to be there in the Morphing Python, but I can't find them now. Or perhaps that was the poser python, can't really remember, but I hope I find them somehow. I'd love to have that tongue flick out
Again, thank you very much for the visit and the encouragement!
Cheers!

Only 'counter comment', I used to think the same thing about the post work aspect. Then I remembered spending hours in a dark room, dodging, burning, double exposing, tweaking color balance, etc. I got over the negative aspects of post work eventually. I do try to make the image the best I can render and do minimum post. But I find that in many cases it's inevitable, even if it's only an area a few pixels wide.

Ah, I have no problems with a bit of color corrections etc. It's just that if I render I don't like to paint atop it, and if I paint I don't like to mix other media.
I know it's a bit of misplaced idealism, but I try and do everything in one software as far as possible. Nowadays I try to do even color correction in luxrender itself so the image is untouched later.
I know, even I did a lot of dodging and burning in the darkroom in the past, but somehow even then I felt that it was because of a shortcoming of proper planning/exposure/execution. I mean if everything had gone well than I'd not have to do that innit? The other reason I don't like it is because I end up going overboard with it and can never stop myself from infinitely keep working on it, and even then I'm not completely satisfied with it! haha. So this way I get to blame the software for my shortcomings!! haha.
Anyways, a friend here found a posable snake tongue for me & I think I'll redo the scene with the tongue sometime in the near future, so that should work out!
Cheers!
