actually in the books it says that sensei didn't make anyone the leader, the guys just started naturally following him eventually. this is kinda why i was confused during the 6th season when they were deciding who wold be the new leader because lloyd was never really the leader in the first place.

Yeah, it wasn't really clear in the show itself. I'm not sure how canon the books are, to be totally fair.
Mostly, those lines were included more for humor than accuracy. In this scenario, most likely the three of them had a big argument about it, and eventually asked Sensei, who was just like "yeah whatever."
If you just wanted to let me know about the inaccuracy; yes, I know. I hope this explained my reasoning a bit about the inclusion of those lines. ^^
