THE TENGU"Tengu (天狗?, "heavenly dogs") are a class of supernatural creatures found in Japanese folklore, art, theater and literature. They are one of the best known yōkai (monster-spirits) and are sometimes worshipped as Shinto kami (revered spirits or gods). Although they take their name from a dog-like Chinese demon (Tiangou), the tengu were originally thought to take the forms of birds of prey, and they are traditionally depicted with both human and avian characteristics. The earliest tengu were pictured with beaks, but this feature has often been humanized as an unnaturally long nose, which today is practically the tengu's defining characteristic in the popular imagination."

How did a flock of these guys lose to teenagers dressed as ninjas? Oh right, because they were fighting the Power Rangers!
Seriously though, I like this (and that_ look better than the real look with the super-long nose. Doesn't Yokai mean "demon" though? Were Tengu good or evil, or like us and in a grey area?

I've also read somewhere that Tengu were the 'inventors' and 'innovators' of martial arts as well; I dabble a little in it myself, so I appreciate the design more for it so. Your depiction of the Tengu also helps take it a long way!

This is a VERY good picture, though there are a few discrepencies with the origional tengu. Their staff was a tridational Shoulin staff of nine rings. The Monks used these to tangle spears in fights, but when the tengu would shake these and the rings rattled together, anyone whithen earshot would be unable to see the tengu. So only the deaf, or someone far away could see a tengu unless he wanted to be seen.
Most tengu could take human form, though some had trouble with this. That is why some tengu looked like humans with long noses. That was really their beak.
Other then that you did a WONDERFUL job... I love the attention to small details!

I do a little bit of life action role playing. My character is a tengu and I am slowly building up a more elaborate costume which will include wings and claws and perhaps even armour. I am inspired by your drawing and I am thinking maybe even drawing a picture based on my character. Great work, I really enjoy the dynamic pose showing this creature's care free spirit.
