Description
HUNTING THE ALKAZIRby Finnian MacManus
For depthCORE XLV: PRIMAL [link]
“There’s not many a bounty hunter that can bring down a Great Alkazir… The demon rampages through civilizations, absorbing them into the infinite crust of it’s skin. It’s true form lurks behind layers of architecture, landscape and lifeforms, but those layers rip apart just like any other substance… when you apply the correct amount of firepower.”
Photoshop and Tablet, hope you enjoy!

Hmm unfortunately I didn't read much tutorials for coloring, more for values... would say to check out FZD's youtube videos!

Interesting concept. I wonder if anything remains alive in the cities that end up piled up on this thing's back?

It took a while to "enter into" this picture. I think I stared at it full screen for a full minute or two (which is a long time for me, flippin through my usual 200 new deviations not to mention my ADHD meds are just starting to kick in) before I really started to grasp the world. At first I was just taken by the fabulous colours, the intriguing shapes of the aircraft, and the wonkyness of everything. Then I started recognizing signs of life - weird alien life - and the familiar themes of organization we associate with civilization. I started to get where I am, and then I started to realize what was happening. The demon itself, the "Great Alkazir," looks perfectly impossible. This is something I love about sci fi; the way it rejects a human norm while conforming to it enough to communicate something - it kind of has that mind-stretching aspect to it. I feel like this demon also defies the conventional "creature creation" styles that we see a lot these days, which are overly designy and detailed (3D models, textures, anatomy, stuff like that) and can sometimes end up failing to provoke any response on the part of the interpreter because they dictate rather then suggest. Leaving room for an open-ended interpretation of this beast is the perfect fit for a creature you abstractly describe as a "demon [that] rampages through civilizations, absorbing them into the infinite crust of it’s skin" Finally, when I really feel like I am immersed in this setting, I start to notice the action (weird, that this is what I notice last). The motion blurs, the missiles, the violence, the thrill of pursuit. Not only am I being transported to this other world, I am here at such an exciting time, maybe even a deeply important time. It's almost like I should feel lucky to have seen this, like a shooting star or an historic event.
This is a great example of what I find exciting about good digital art; it's about world-creation. Even if this is just one of a million images I'll see today, it generates a new space in my mind. I'm left with an abstract idea that there are other places out there, weird places, where things are distinctly different from the reality I experience in my immediacy. The limits of our collective imagination get pushed further and further every time something like this is released into the world. I'm glad I took the time to let all that sink in.

They should really focus on just pushing their village somewhere else.

Hrmmm.
A good, solid concept. Rich, smooth colourings. Good textures on the stonework. Great details on the creature's face...
The only thing that spoiles it for me, is the black outline/'arms' on its mid section.

Thanks! The black section is the demons 'true' form... rips in the creature skin expose the unknown evil beneath.
