Are you painting on an ordinary notebook for your journal?
If you don't paint on watercolour paper, it might be much more difficult to get good results.

I'm painting on difficult paper for sure. I'm using Bible paper. I had some cheap kids paints that were chalky. But I just got some watercolor pencils by Faber Castel that I think will work much better for me. I'm also going to try to use them at times in a sketch book but it's not official watercolor paper. Here's my LJ showing my first attempt with the kid's paints.

Your first attempt looks fine, esp. considering the fact that you have used kids paints on very thin paper.
You might get better results with your watercolour pencils, (don't add too much water though).
You can also place a rhodoid sheet under your current page to protect the page which is below.
