Description Part of the "Adelaide Art Challenge: Spring Edition" by . Hope you enjoy!

"Vilas are dual-natured creatures that embody the temperamental nature of Spring. On the outside, they are sweet, loving, and good natured, akin to that of a frivolous, lost soul. However, should you trespass against them in any number of ways, from impeding in their circle dances to harming them or their forest in any way, they will not hesitate to bring the earth and heavens down upon you and your brethren tenfold.

I have only ever met one such Vila by the name of Adelaide. I was hiking through the forests of Bohemia, when I happened to see a bunch of animals which you wouldn't normally find hanging out together. After all, its not often you'll see a squirrel, rabbit, lizard, owl, parrot, cardinal, and blue jay in the same place. Especially in this part of the world.

Noticing my gaze, and alerting them as best I could that I meant no harm (a Drider like myself doesn't exhume the most friendliest of qualities, and I may or may not have gotten hit once or twice in the miscommunication) they led me to their carriage, where Adelaide and Nereida were resting. Nereida is a royal El Naddaha, and a representative for her tribe in the great council of Mediterranean Merfolk (GCMM). Having been an attendee there once before, I quickly recognized her, and we made proper introductions.

But Adelaide, poor girl, was a bit on the timid side, choosing to quietly smile and play with her plant. I asked Nereida what was wrong (and what an El Naddaha like herself was doing so far away from her kingdom, or any large body of water), and she divulged that Adelaide has been through a lot in her life, suffering long-standing abuse by her adopted mother and sisters, to the point where she nearly represses her individuality and accepts punishment willingly.

No Vila, or any sentient on this earth, should ever have to go through that.

Nereida went on to admit that her and her friends and animal companions had staged a rescue mission for her just the night before, and now they were making their way toward Hailstone, a province due east ruled by a distant king. In fact, we were in the carriage of Hailstone's prince, a fellow named Frost, but when I asked for more information on them she simply said him and his assistant left to run a quick errand.

(A few things to note: Nereida admitted that Adelaide also served a key role in her own rescue, albeit seemingly accidentally. For the first time ever, Adelaide snapped, and the Vila's wrath nearly killed her adopted sister. Also, I have never heard of Hailstone. Perhaps their lands are just as distant as their leaders.)

After a few minutes of somber silence, I had an idea. I asked both Nereida and Adelaide if they had ever heard of a circle dance, a traditional Vila activity. Adelaide shook her head, and Nereida raised an eyebrow. Smiling and walking toward the campfire, I began to dance around it, trying to exhibit the free spirit that Vilas should have. I looked... ridiculous. But they were laughing, so it was worth it. Soon enough, Nereida joined in, and we both tumbled around the campfire.

Mind you, Nereida has no legs. I have 8. And we were doing a dance designed by bipedal fairies. Graceful doesn't even begin to describe it.

Getting into the mood, some of the animals began to join in as well, or create some kind of music. I reached out to Adelaide, offering my hand. Happily, she took it. We danced like it was nobody's business, giggling and laughing, and having an good time. Of course, Adelaide was quick to master the circle dance, besting all of us easily and adding a few wing maneuvers for good measure. But, as the circle dance does, it brought out the joy locked within us, some more than others.

Later that night, I had to take my leave. After exchanging farewells, and getting a smile out of Adelaide, I went off on my way. Hopefully, we'll cross paths again someday. And by then, maybe Adelaide will have grown, like the plants and animals which she cares for so deeply. As a true Vila, the maidens of spring.

Sincerely,
Anansi"
