some concept art for magical girls, and practice with expressionsalice is a shy, demure girl with an interest for fashion and the element of fire; her outfit is based on a phoenix
carmela is a spunky, outgoing, stick-it-to-the-man type who is associated with water, and her dress is based on a wave and a fishscale pattern
tori is a rather cold, preppy type who is tied to earth, and she's inspired by a forest color palette and flower petals
deciding on a final design for these three took two days on paper, the actual lining and coloring in SAI took all of an hour 8D
I know it's messy, but it's mostly just concept art - please, leave critique on their designs and color choice, just not the anatomy/art quality itself xD
also, because it's obligatory: original characters, do not steal kthx <3

I really do like the colors. I could easily tell the theme of the characters without even reading the description. I would love to see a larger scale of them each with a little more detail though to really get a good idea of tiny deatils that are noted, but kind of lost. They look like part of a team without being cookie cutter outfits of each other.

I saw the designs and was like, uwah, these are really precious!- but the thing that REALLY sold me was when I read your comments, I can't tell you how much I LOVE the personality reversal in them! Shy fire-user Alice has totally stolen my heart, but I adore all of them. I find the themes you picked for the really really cute, I think the charm is how they don't match (compared to a team with uniforms) but the similar elements are still there. I also really like the direct influence of things like fishscales, it's not a common motif and that really makes it charming for me. I'm completely nitpicking here, but maybe more green on Tori would be something to test, depending on how much the last three girls are color themed. But I'm honestly grasping at straws here, Tori individually is perfect with brown on her main dress. Q__Q
I'd really love to see what you do with shadow/air/electricity, as well as because it would probably be best to have all six mains concepts drawn before trying to tweak individual designs? Mostly just to make sure they're balanced, in their own ways.

I love these! The designs are really creative and fun, and I like how the personalities are the opposite of what people normally do: fire is usually for the loud, hot-headed, and spunky; water for the calm and serene; and earth for the pleasant, motherly, and tough. I love it when people defy expectations and be creative and bitchin' yeaaaaaah!

I have a bunch of opposite-element sillyheads, too, so now we're officially expectation-defying-element-related-character buddies! Whether you like it or not.
Semi-related: I lurrrrrrve the name Carmela ♥, and it's refreshing to see a character named 'Alice' that's independent of Wonderland-y stuff. Insert something about Tori here!

in all seriousness though, do you know of any groups specifically for magical girl OCs? there are tons of mahou shoujo groups, but they accept normal fanart along with OCs, and I prefer to see people's original designs xD

I'm thinking about making a group (since I totally just found out how to make them) about 'defying expectations': it wouldn't just be about conflicting elements and personalities. You could also throw in stuff like colors (a yellow-themed character who's a depressing jerk; a red character who isn't the hot-blooded main character), species (a mermaid who isn't gentle and sweet, a fairy who isn't adorable and nature oriented or a trickster, a vampire that isn't a charming killer or an angsty teen), etc., along with twists in genres: those dark magical girl stories, monsters with refreshing twists and turns, deconstructions, stuff like that.
And then a Magical Girl OC group must be made.

he's normally ULTRA-skittish since he was a barn kitty, and he only likes to be petted if he's hungry or you're in the bathroom
he absolutely loves the tile flooring in the bathroom, he rolls against it and rubs his face up against it and everything and will just sit there for hours

there are actually six main characters based on fire, earth, water (these three obviously), electricity, shadow, and yes, air. tons of background characters based on various psuedo-elements like ice and sound, too.
actually, there's a rock girl planned, but I haven't though of doing metal or wood
