Description
I have a lot of apologies stacked up for this one.First - it took me a long time to get around to doing this, so I hope it is still helpful. HOWEVER- I realized part way through that I hadn't used pencil crayons in over 6 months, and that I had kind of forgotten how to use them XD So, I was learning and re-learning throughout this too.
Also - Attempting to put my drawing process into followable steps was something of a challenge, because I often jump back and forward; therefore, it may be hard to follow. And I occasionally change my mind half-way through a process.
Furthermore - !WARNING!!!!IT IS HUUUUGE!!!!!WARNING! So I'd go make yourself a cup of coffee while you wait for it to download. It is also filled with lots of boring talking, (and writing you can't read) which I'm pretty sure isn't very helpful. And the pictures are most likely too small and bleached by my scanner, so you'll have to use a little bit of your imagination.
If you have ANY suggestions, they are welcome.
Also- if there is enough interest, and you aren't completely horrified by my horrific teaching skills, I may do a marker tutorial as well. Later.
A NOTE ON PENCIL CRAYONS/ COLORED PENCILS/THOSE BRIGHT STICKS
I use prismacolor pencil crayons. I have a pack of 132, or something ridiculous like that- but I also have additionally berol prismacolors, and some special release prismacolors. For this picture I used approx 40 colors - but this does not mean you can't still create beautiful art with less. Nor do your pencil crayons have to be prismacolors or derwents or stuff like that. I started off with crayolas - and they were fine for me to start off with. They are waxier, and all waxy pencil crayons (even derwents) are harder to layer, so you have to press really really softly for your base color. For further info on pencil crayons, there are some great tutorials here on DA.
VOCAB- I like making words up, like "scratchies" which are those little white spots you get if you take a black (or dark pencil crayon) and color on a piece on paper. If you want to get a pure smooth black with no scratchies, your inclination is to press harder and beat those scratchies into submission. This works, but creates a uninteresting black which is hard to shade with. Instead, charm your scratchies by keeping them for as long as possible by layering. Layering is very important - and will eventually rid you of them.
My little oval pencil stroke diagram at the top is lame, but attempt for quick oval strokes like that- but which cover the surface area of your page very slowly. (So your hand is moving fairly fast with the tiny oval rhythm, but you are not moving across the page quickly - this means you will evenly cover an area.)
Going SLOWLY is important. Coloring EVENLY is important. LAYERING is important. And having CONFIDENCE, patience and a excitement for progress is very important.
I hope my essays covered most questions - but if you have any more, please ask

Very well done, ThanX!
I found the step by step drawings and notes very easy to understand and follow. You did a nice job of putting it together and it's cool that you shared that.
I would love it if you did the marker tutorial you talked about. I like seeing how different artists create their pieces. I often find myself saying, wow I would have never thought to do it that way.
So, again thanks for sharing.
Cheers,
Kato

Haha this made since to me! I'm forever trying to learn and am finally getting to the stage where I'm using greens in my purples to get contrast and stuff without being scared~ This helped me a lot~~ (and yes, I use Crayola 8D They are waxy pencils, but I like the gradient they produce sometimes~)

I barely managed to comment on the lineart, and... it is here o,O Thanks so much for uploading it, it made for a very interesting read- seeing the things done step by step answers so many questions at once!
Sorry to start from the bad end today, but I'm afraid it's also very challenging to the reader- simply because of the size of the referring pictures The steps and techniques you're discussing are often very subtle; making out the exact difference between the particular steps (especially at the flesh shading phase) can be very difficult with small references
I understand you had to keep the file size in mind, but having them so small hurts the idea behind the tutorial- usually, the real secret behind a step or another is in the very close details. You have a *lot* to show to others, have more faith in your materials! ^___^
If I could suggest something, there are two things that could help with it: Using a smaller font and close- ups The small font would allow you to cramp up the text more, making extra room for bigger pictures, while close- ups show extra details while sparing a lot of the space, and also directs the attention of the viewer where it is needed
You've already used them a lot, but a tutorial can be completely shameless about it- filling all the space with the exact thing you're working on right now, like the eye or the tress of hair, could be the perfect way to spare some space
This said, you've done a really good work on the content of the tutorial- it's informative, detailed and filled with the exact kind of information many beginning readers could spend hours trying to find (usually in vain) The attention to the small details like the pressure of the cranyon, the layers, the steps or the exact points of applying the colour are especially priceless; giving the exact colours of the cranyons used, as well as the photos of the whole range is another very thoughtful move- even if the exact colours'll not be used by the reader, it gives a good idea as to what shades of the same colours are used, and in which parts exactly xD The text is written in a very appealing language- you take a lot of effort of explaining what is happening and why rather than just giving out dry, functional directions ^^ All in all, it makes your work a very good tutorial for the inexperienced users(and that's a big complement)- it helps comprehending the whole process in a way that can be used later in different pictures rather than showing "how this one drawing was done", and avoids a very common trap of saying "do as I do and the effect is that", without saying what is done or what exactly "that" effect is
Summing up, you did a solid, fine work on creating an informative and useful tutorial that could be a big help with the traditional drawings to those who really need it If you still have the scans of particular phases, though, please consider making it a bit more user- friendly with bigger illustrations
And, while I'm at it, please remove this "shamelessly unhelpful" thing as well- it was completely shameless of you to write something like that of this piece of work!
You've got a lot of useful information you know how to share in an communicative, easy-to-understand way; even if the first attempt might require some adjustments, you give it way too little credit!

XD It doesn't help either that my scanner kills color, haha - you can barely see pint on the first picture.
I realised, close to finishing this tutorial, that I had a lot to learn about teaching XD
First thing that came to my mind, coincidentally, was the size of the pictures and their focus. I completely agree with what you're saying - the process which I use is very, very gradual, and requires a lot of small changes over a ridiculous amount of time. If I can't capture the actual steps that I take, then it is as you say, challenging to recreate. However, the other problem with pictures, as I mentioned, is the scan. Often, my scanner doesn't pick up on the subtleties, and just gives you a general wash or idea of what is actually there. For instance, in the phase where I add peach then neon pink to the hair, it is almost impossible to see; where in RL the peach turns the hair almost brown, and then the pink highlights are astonishlingly bright. Whereas, if I scan at the end of the process, a general impression of the picture is okay - because all elements have been included. Haha - that's awkward to understand XD But anyways, I tried to compensate the lack of details in the picture with detailed explanations. But I've always been wordy, and so giving insightly and PRECISE instructions was challenging
Thank you very much though! I did try har to be consciencious about the universality of tutorials, and wanted it to be able to followed even in pictures that don't feaure girls with blue hair (beause that doesn't happen all too often)
I will try for the more user-frienly approach, as I still have all 35 scans XD
But I'm going to take a break first, haha - I didn't realize how gib a project that would be to undertake.

Brat-Innocenty In reply to fog-mire [2008-12-20 18:56:16 +0000 UTC]
Heh, I would never think the scanner might be doing anything to the colours here ^__^ It's true that the difference in colour intensity between particular steps is hard to notice, but I thought of it rather as of the specific style I think it's one of the things where the close-ups can come handy- showing a coloured space magnified will make the surface covered in each colour larger, and the difference might be easier to spot
But blergh, I'm repeating myself!
It's great to hear all the scans are still in place and you still have the willpower to push it further Taking a break sounds like a natural thing to do, though- the instruction materials like that are a lot harder, more frustrating and time- consuming to prepare than they seem! ^__^
As a side note, congratulations on making to the first page with Hatsune Miku and to the second with this tutorial yesterday, it was very nice to see them appreciated!

It always wins.
Oh I'll get back to it, after I finish all my imminent due dates of secret santas *runs around in circles and then implodes*
Oh really? Thank you very much for letting me know ^^ I didn't even notice I have to say I don't check the front page very often..
