Description The books I’ve illustrated, Sterling Signature’s Romeo & Juliet and Macbeth have now hit store shelves! Each book contains laser-cut versions of my work, as well as a multitude of printed illustrations as well! I’m so proud of these, and feel really lucky to have gotten such a sweet job. And these are only the first two books in the Signature Shakespeare series - I’m already working on books 3 and 4 (Much Ado about Nothing and Hamlet)!

Chin-Yee Lai did a gorgeous job with the typography on the covers. And I worked with an amazing team that has put together these really special, wonderful books. I hope that you enjoy them - I know I do!

Barnes and Noble has them in-store and online, and you can find them on Amazon or Powell's or whatever your favorite book store is! They're usually just a bit hidden in the stores, heh.

Thanks for checking them out - I hope that you really enjoy perusing them!

Thank you! The printer did a wonderful job laser-cutting them. I see that you're in the UK - I believe that Amazon has them in stock if your local bookstore doesn't have them!

These look amazing! The problem I run into a lot is having my papercuts not look like papercuts when copied. How did you make the front cover still look like papercuts?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

folderol In reply to aerockyul [2012-04-22 18:05:46 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much! Yes, that is a big, big problem that one-layer paper illustrations are faced with. If you wanna shoot me an email on here I can give you some ideas that I've seen other artists use!

As for how these look like papercuts - they are actually laser-cut out of a thin cardstock and mounted!

aerockyul In reply to folderol [2012-04-22 23:52:02 +0000 UTC]

Cool, do you do that yourself or is there a place around you that you can ask them to do that for you (the laser cutting, I mean)? I saw you used layers, which does help in the few times I've used them. I've been commissioned a couple times for my work to be used in mass production, but I've not been able to get something going with the single layers. Now that I see it can be done, it's definitely opened up what I think I can do.
Congratulations on your success!

folderol In reply to aerockyul [2012-04-23 13:31:43 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

The publisher took care of all of the lasercutting, thankfully. I took my cuts and turned them into vectors in Illustrator so that we could feed them into the cutter. If you know how to use the Pen tool, you could definitely do that with your work! If you get a large enough commission, you could look into getting a die-cutting machine (which is better than a laser-cutter, unless you find a really quality company to do it). I heard rumors of a 12"x12" laser cutter, though, that I can look into if you're interested.

You should go for it if you get the opportunity! Check out my friend Julene's work: [link] - she works on one layer and does limited runs of laser-cut pieces for clients. If you like, I can ask her if she has her own machine or hires someone to do it, etc.

Just lemme know! Your work is great!

aerockyul In reply to folderol [2012-04-24 02:02:53 +0000 UTC]

I'm definitely interested. So you do the cuts, convert them to digital, and then there is a laser-cutter that will mass copy? I feel slow with this tech, in that all I do is cut and then scan. I'm going to start researching this a lot more, it could open up a lot of doors down the road, since I've never really had a good way of advertising/showing what I can do to a wider audience. I've had very limited commissions because I've been holding myself back in what I think I can do.
Julene's work looks awesome, it's a good website. I've been mostly doing birthday and christmas gifts, I loved the anniversary idea for the paper anniversary!
Is a laser cutter cost effective, or would it be cheaper to find a place that does it?

folderol In reply to aerockyul [2012-04-24 12:46:39 +0000 UTC]

Okay so I asked Julene and she does get someone else to do it for her. In the end, that may be the most cost-effective route, considering the quality.

And happy birthday!

Thank you and thank you for checking on that, it's a good thing to know going forward. But just knowing it's possible sort of refreshes my love for my work and I'm excited to get going on a couple of projects.

folderol In reply to aerockyul [2012-04-24 05:14:24 +0000 UTC]

Hm... those are questions I'm not sure I can answer specifically because they depend on so many circumstances. For example, there might be a place near you that does high-quality laser-cuts on the cheap, but maybe not. You gotta be careful with the price too, because good lasercuts are not easy to come by. Maybe there's a school or business around you that has a machine you could use! As for the "portable" one, I can't really vouch for that either, because I don't know the quality. Considering that a good cut comes from a mixture of a quality laser and a well-monitored vacuum, I'm not sure. I'll ask Julene and let you know what she does!
