i'm currently reading Blood Ravens the Dawn of War Omnibus by C.S. Goto plus i'm still playing Warhammer 40.000 Dawn of War and i have to say that an exterminatus is mentioned (in both) as cleaning a planet of a terrible heresy down to the last man, woman and child by the Blood Ravens company...but there's no mention of it being done by a fleet of ships or the space marines themselves...

I think they don't have to aim.
Look at BOLTAH, and above barrel you can see some kind of camera/laser targeter. I think this is viewfinder and they see on helmet visors where they aim. Or directy on eyes (armour is connected with SM nervous system)
