Made with iOS IbisPaint. Speed draw hereΒ youtu.be/Acl76Ph72Gk?t=1496th century AD. This man's appearance is ceremonial - the excubitors' gear was supposed to evoke a more 'Roman' feel (shoutout to AMELIANVS for showing me the sources), hence the crest and pteryges here - but I'm assuming they dressed differently when in combat. His axe is likewise (probably) ceremonial, though I like the idea of them being some sort of axe-wielding proto-Varangians.
