Merry (late) Christmas Erin!

This illustration was done as a Christmas gift for my friend Erin. She’s writing a story about a magic book right now, and asked for me to illustrate it for her to further her writing. She asked for a book that was made of wood, but looked as if it had sculpted swirls within the wood. I tried to make the grain of the wood follow it so that it looked like the swirls grew that way in the wood-looking natural, yet unnatural at the same time.

She also told me that the book had a special key that may have been made after the book was made, and that it should not match the gold metal used to make the book, and should be made of silver. Why a key would be made long after the creation of the lock is strange to me, but it should be interesting to read why it is so.

I wanted to make the background look like it could be either modern, in a girls bedroom in perhaps a tower, OR could even be taken for the inside of a old castle tower.

This is NOT the kind of thing I normally draw, so it was a bit of a stretch for me since normally I illustrate people or characters. But it’s good for artists to spread their wings a little. I also wanted to play with the idea that this was at night by giving everything a blue-ish overlay. Do you get that from it?

Everything was hand painted in Photoshop with my tablet.
