Here is a photo i took of a friendly, wild Gopher Tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) in Lake Louisa State Park in Florida. Sand Barrens. March, 2012.Native, free and wild. Chowing down on some Paspalum grass.

Gopher Tortoises seem very friendly. I remember when I was walking down a nature trail with my friend in Florida, one of these fellas came out of his burrow and started following us.

This one wasn't too shy either, as long as you stayed a few feet away. Quite a number of these make their home at Lake Louisa State Park in the Florida Citrus belt, a great place to see this species that is now on the candidate species list until enough funds are in place for it to be placed on the Federal Threatened Species list... this keystone species needs protection in the wild. They are awesome indeed!

Thanks! Their systems of burrows were very cool, in that very sandy soil. Nice that you can still see wild ones in the special places that are left.

cool , this looks yummy my grandma said .as she saw the image. i told her it's an image taken from a friend on deviant-art .she also said lovely shot. where can you find these lovely things?

if you mean the chanterelle mushrooms, i find them under oak trees in the woods when its been moist enough from late May to September... there are poisonous mushrooms out there too, so only pick when you've learned from someone who knows what they are doing... but when you do they are so good!!!!
